Adair, Dr. George T.
Funeral services for Dr. George T. Adair, 100 years and 11 months, of Cleveland were held Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Alexanders Gateway Chapel Funeral Home, Cleveland. The Rev. Leland Bagwell and the Rev. Ross Sparks officiated with burial in Bowman City Cemetery, Bowman. Dr. Adair died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at his residence following a period of declining health. Born in 1901 in Elberton, he was the son of the late Dr. S. B. and Gussie Thornton Adair. He was a graduate of Gibson- Mercer Academy, The University of Georgia and The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, class of 1931. He began his practice in Elberton before relocating to the Old Logan Mill on Town Creek, White County, in 1937. For many years he was the only licensed veterinarian in the seven counties of Northeast Georgia. Prior to his retirement in 1976, Dr. Adair was instrumental in the founding of the White County Farmers Exchange and the White County Farm Bureau. Dr. Adair will long be remembered for his tireless efforts and unflagging zeal to improve the state of agriculture in the Northeast Georgia mountains. Dr. Adair was a known philanthropist among the colleges and universities of the South, and a devoted champion and regular contributor to countless conservative causes. Even in his very last days, he was much concerned about the state of the nation and the future of its young people. Dr. Adair was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sewell Wallis Adair, formerly of Elberton. Survivors include his devoted niece, Virginia Brookshire of Charlotte, N.C.; and his boys, Albert Taylor Sr. and Jerry McAfee, both of Cleveland. After a long and fruitful life, Dr. Adair leaves behind a multitude of friends and admirers who have been warmly touched by his extraordinary life and works. Aldis, Nathan Robert
The family of Nathan Robert Aldis, 24, of Clarkesville, received friends at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home of Cornelia from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19.  Mr. Aldis died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Angel Medical Center in Franklin, N.C., following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  Born in Cane County, Ill., on July 9, 1979, he was a self-employed carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith and loved hunting, fishing and cars. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert Dare and William and Edna Aldis.  Surviving are his parents, Robert and Chrystal Dare Aldis of Clarkesville; sister, Dusti Aldis of Lilburn; nephew, Noah Grey Casey of Lilburn; and grandmother, Eva Mae Selpien of Elgin, Ill.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Barbara Fortenberry, 2062 Highway 115, Demorest, GA 30535. Allen, James L. ‘Jake’
 Funeral services for James L. “Jake” Allen, 61, of Batesville will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Providence Baptist Church. The Rev. Brion Williams and the Rev. J. R. Elrod will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery.  Mr. Allen died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at his residence.  Born in Habersham County on Sept. 10, 1941, he was a member of Providence Baptist Church. Mr. Allen was formerly employed with Scovill Manufacturing Company. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Allen.  Survivors include his wife, Nancy Leger Allen of Toccoa; parents, Fred T. and Eunice Wood Allen of Batesville; daughter, Kay Miller of Batesville; son, Sean Allen of Batesville; stepdaughter, Sherry Brady of Toccoa; stepsons, Mike Gallo of Seneca, S.C., Thomas Gallo of Toccoa; sisters, Dorothy Thompson of Clarkesville, Lavalle Nix of Turnerville; brothers, Thurman Allen and David O. Ambrose, Bessie Inez Streetman
 Funeral services for Bessie Inez Streetman Ambrose, 70, of Homer will be at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 14, at Homer Alliance Church. The Rev. George Tubbs will officiate, with burial in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, Lula.  Mrs. Ambrose died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at her residence.  Born in Jackson County on Nov. 18, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Magnolia and Manual Streetman. Mrs. Ambrose was a homemaker and a member of Homer Alliance Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Anderson, Gerrie S.  Memorial services for Gerrie S. Anderson of Roswell will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Waleska United Methodist Church on the Reinhardt College campus.  Mrs. Anderson died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Roswell.  Born in Edwardsville, Ill., in 1926, she moved to Decatur when she was 4 years old. She attended Glenwood Elementary, Decatur Girls’ High School, Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) and Marsh-Draughn Business College. In 1945, she married her beloved Bill, who preceded her in death in 1989. They lived in Arkansas, Texas, and Virginia Beach, Va., for more than 20 years before retiring to Vero Beach, Fla. Mrs. Anderson recently had moved to the Roswell area.  Mrs. Anderson was an avid reader and wordsmith; she worked as a legal, medical and church secretary for many years. She completed a crossword puzzle every morning before breakfast. She was also a sharp bridge player and known for her witty, salty humor.  When her children were young, she was always the Girl Scout leader, Den Mother, PTA officer, church youth-group leader and involved in her community. She was a lifelong Presbyterian and always was active in the Women of the Church.  Survivors include her sister, Gloria Crawford of Cornelia; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Betty Anderson of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Jim Williams of Canton; daughter, Julie Baker of Jupiter, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.  Memorials may be sent to Faith Presbyterian Church, 3655 Reinhardt College Parkway, Canton, GA 30114.  Huey Funeral Home, Canton, is in charge of arrangements.  Submitted by Kim Gordon (Feb 2003)
Ariail, Felton A. ‘Doc’
 Funeral services for Felton A. “Doc” Ariail, 85, of Alto will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Nails Creek Baptist Church, Homer. The Rev. Paul Robertson will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery.  Mr. Ariail died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at his residence.  Born in Franklin County on Dec. 7, 1917, he was the son of the late Claude and Vastie Bellamy Ariail. Mr. Ariail was retired from Ford Motor Company and was a member of Nails Creek Baptist Church. Ashley, Brandon Lee
Funeral services for Brandon Lee Ashley, 17, of Mt. Airy will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, in the chapel of Haisten-McCullough Funeral Home in Griffin. Burial will follow in County Line United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. Ashley died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Born in Hall County on April 29, 1986, he was a cashier at Winn-Dixie and an upcoming senior at Habersham Central High School. Mr. Ashley was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Regina Kathleen May Ashley. Survivors include his father, Jack Ashley of Mt. Airy; grandparents, Mary Goff of Mt. Ballew, Charles Travis
CLEVELAND - Funeral services for Charles Travis Ballew, 65, of Sautee-Nacoochee, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Gaines officiating. Burial followed in Center Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  Mr. Ballew died Monday, March 10, 2003, at his home following injuries sustained in a bulldozer accident.  Mr. Ballew was born in Fairmount, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oliver C. Ballew of Marietta. He was a veteran, serving in the United States Navy. He was the owner of Yonah Pawn and Music Store and attended New Hope Baptist Church, Cornelia.  He is survived by his wife, Linda Hulsey Ballew of Sautee-Nacoochee; son, Mickiel Ballew of Acworth; daughters, Rebecca Chastain of Cartersville, Lea Poth of White; stepdaughters, Julie Garrett, Rachael Meggitt, Anita Allison and Amy Cantrell, all of Cleveland; stepson, Wayne McKinney of Cleveland; grandson, Christopher Chastain of Cartersville; brothers, Lanier Ballew and Neal Ballew, both of Carrollton; sisters, Virginia Greene of Marietta, Vera Jo Warren of Smyrna and Elizabeth Williams of Powder Springs; and 11 step grandchildren.  Barrett Funeral Home, Cleveland, was in charge of arrangements.   Submitted by Kim Gordon (Mar 2003)
Beasley, William Dana
Memorial services for William Dana Beasley, 61, of Athens will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, in the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Turnerville. Mr. Beasley died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002. A native of Savannah, he was a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Social Work. He retired after 30 years as a licensed clinical social worker with the state of Georgia through the Northeast Georgia Mental Health Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Millard Beasley. Funeral services for Belle H. Black, 92, of Demorest were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. The Rev. George Deadwyler and Carroll Jeffers officiated, with burial in Fairfield Cemetery, Demorest.  Mrs. Black died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Habersham Home following an extended illness.  Born in Habersham County on March 13, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Christopher C. and Surcia Pruitt Hightower. Mrs. Black was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was retired from Habersham Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edvin T. Blalock, Harold Thomas
Funeral services for Harold Thomas Blalock, 80, of Helen will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Helen First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens.  Mr. Blalock died Wednesday, March 12, 2003.  Born on June 7, 1922, in Fulton County, he was the son of the late Luther and Nellie Bailey Blalock. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in China, Central Burma and India.  He was also a retired salesman for Raley Brothers Food Brokers, with 33 years of service. He was a member of Helen First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Martha Jo Blalock of Helen; two daughters, Susan Blalock of Rex and Jean Rogers of Mt. Airy, Md.; sister, Mary Blalock of Atlanta; one grandchild, Seth Rogers of Mt. Airy, Md. Bohannon, John
Funeral services for John Bohannon Jr., 81, of Demorest were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel. The Rev. William E. Cox officiated; burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 15, and the honor guard from Ft. McPherson. Mr. Bohannon died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center. Born in White County on June 16, 1921, he was the son of the late John Sr. and Katie Fennell Bohannon. He was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister. Mr. Bohannon was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was a painter and floor sander. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his sister, Betty Wilson of Demorest, and a number of nieces and nephews, including Gail Chambers of Demorest with whom he made his home. Funeral services for Peggy L. Bohannon, 78, of Alto will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 27, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel with the Rev. Anthony Shore officiating. Burial will follow in Demorest City Cemetery. Mrs. Bohannon died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at a private nursing home. Born on Oct. 4, 1924, in Habersham County, she was a retired textile worker with Riegel Textile and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lillie Canup Lynch; her husband, Walter Bohannon; a son, Terry Bohannon; a granddaughter, Tracy Crowe; two brothers, Billy Lynch and Walter Lynch; and a sister, Jean Gailey. Survivors include her daughter, Avanell Crowe of Baldwin; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Ronald Moody of Alto, Cathy and Harold Crowe of Mt. Bowden, Forrest Lee
GASTONIA, N.C.  Funeral services for Forrest Lee Bowden, 69, of Gastonia, N.C., were held Wednesday, June 19, at Grace Baptist Church. The Rev. Brian Wright, the Rev. Don Mott and the Rev. Clarence McMahan officiated with burial in Gaston Memorial Park. Mr. Bowden died Monday, June 17, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Habersham County, he was a son of the late E.B. and Mary Bowden. He was a lifelong member of Grace Baptist Church and was retired from the A.G. Boone Company in Charlotte, N.C. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Manolia Bowden. Brooks, John Doyle
Memorial services for John Doyle Brooks, 74, of Baldwin, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Tates Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Jerrell Beatty will officiate.  Mr. Brooks died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at his residence following a sudden illness.  Born in Jefferson County, Ala., on June 21, 1928, he was the son of the late John W. and Effie McCormack Brooks. He was a graduate of Corner High School and was a retired truck driver with the U.S. Postal Service with 20 years of service. Mr. Brooks was a member of Tates Creek Baptist Church.  Survivors include his wife, Dorothy A. Brooks of Baldwin; sons, Gary D. Brooks of Vienna, Va., Steven D. Broome, Wilson
Funeral services for Wilson Broome, 91, of Hollingsworth were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Billy Burrell officiated with burial in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery, with full military honors by the Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 15 and Habersham County American Legion Post No. 84.  Mr. Broome died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at a local nursing home following an extended illness.  Born in Banks County on Nov. 12, 1911, he was the son of the late Skid and Fannie Simmons Broome. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Simmons Broome; son, Melvin Broome; and daughter, Peggy Jean Broome.  Mr. Broome was a lifetime member of the Grant Reeves Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 7720. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Brotherton, Claude L. Jr.
Funeral services for Claude L. Brotherton Jr., 65, of Clarkesville will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel. Pastor Ryan Smith and the Rev. Wayne Morris will officiate. Burial will follow in Harvest Christian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Mote officiating at graveside. Mr. Brotherton died Friday, June 21, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness. Born in Lewis County, N.Y., on Aug. 13, 1936, he was the son of the late Claude Leon Sr. and Curetta Burkhard Brotherton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Jones Brotherton; and brother, John Brotherton. Mr. Brotherton was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 23 years of service, having served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was also retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 23 years of service. Mr. Brotherton was a member of Harvest Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Diane Allen Brotherton; daughter, Pamela Lowe of Clayton; stepdaughters, Candy Adkins of Demorest, Cyndi Simmons of Martin; sons, Raymond Brotherton and Stanley Brotherton, both of Clarkesville, Leon Brotherton of Lake Burton; stepson, Michael Gannon of Lillington, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. Brown, Gary
Funeral services for Gary Brown, 43, of Homer, were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at Timber Ridge Baptist Church. The Rev. Chris York and the Rev. Jesse Savage officiated, with burial in the church cemetery.  Mr. Brown died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta following a brief illness.  Born in Jackson County on Oct. 16, 1959, he was an electrician and a member of Timber Ridge Baptist Church. Mr. Brown was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Brown; and brothers, Keith Brown and Bruce Brown. Survivors include his wife, Edwina Simmons Brown of Mt. Funeral services for Hebron Isaac Brown, 93, of Clarkesville will be held at 2 p.m. today, June 6, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Crossroad Baptist Cemetery in Carnesville. Mr. Brown died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Glenbridge Health Care in Boone, N.C., following an extended illness. Born in Walton County on July 5, 1904, he was the son of the late William and Ada Barnett Brown. Carswell, Bertha Louise Beasley
Funeral services for Bertha Louise Beasley Carswell, 75, of Toccoa will be held at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 14, at Chopped Oak Baptist Church. The Rev. Thomas Gragg and Sue Yearwood will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery.  Mrs. Carswell died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at Stephens County Hospital.  Born in Macon County, N.C., on April 7, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Nevia Maney Beasley. She had lived most of her life in Habersham County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Carswell Jr., who died in 1989.  Mrs. Carswell was a member of Chopped Oak Baptist Church. For many years, she worked with her father-in-law, “Doc” Carswell, and following his death, she worked with her husband at Doc’s Bar-B-Que in Toccoa. Later, she was employed at the Tallulah Falls Co-op Craft Store. She was an accomplished quilter and one of her quilts was selected as an official Olympic quilt, presented to a participating country in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics.  Mrs. Carswell enjoyed many kinds of crafts, gardening and flowers. She was deeply cherished and revered by her family and leaves them a lasting legacy of quiet courage, strength and dignity.  Survivors include her daughter and friend, Charlene Carswell and Don Jenkins, of Smyrna; daughters and sons-in-law, Loraine and Van Mattison of Eastanollee, Nancy and James Scott of Toccoa; son and friend, Jerry Carswell and Linda Bennett of Toccoa; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Jeannie Carswell of Hollywood, Chris and Bambi Carswell of Toccoa; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, R.L. Born in Olney, Mo., on Jan. 18, 1922, he was the son of the late Lewis and Ollie Sanders Carver. Mr. Carver married his wife, Minnie Mae Carver, on Feb. 14, 1968, in Clarkesville. He was self-employed his entire career. His businesses included home improvement, groceries and a restaurant and bar. Mr. Carver founded Family Life Insurance Company. He was a 32nd degree Mason with memberships in Springfield, Ill., and Winfield, Mo. Mr. Carver was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Mae Carver; brothers, Jack Carver, Ed Carver, Virgil Carver; and sister, Floy “Peg” Hagen. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, C. Funeral services for Judy Ann Gillespie Church, 56, of Clarkesville will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 20, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. John Thompson will officiate, with burial in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cemetery in Cornelia. Mrs. Church died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness. Born in Rabun County on Nov. 1, 1946, she lived in the Clarkesville area for 23 years. She was employed with the Habersham County Extension Service and was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Church was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Gillespie; and husband, Harold Norris Church. Survivors include her mother, Trudy Telles Gillespie of Clayton; daughter, Misty Bohannon of Clarkesville; sons, Charlie Church of Clarkesville, James Aaron of St. Marys, Pa., Jody Aaron of Savannah; brother, Dr. Lawrence M. Gillespie of Clayton; sister, Linda Sutt of Clayton; grandchildren, Samantha Aaron, Whitney Bohannon and Katlin Bohannon; three stepdaughters; and five stepsons. Church, Marler Garrison
Funeral services for Marler Garrison Church, 87, of Clarkesville were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the chapel of Church and Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Furman Lewis and the Rev. David B. Turner officiated, with burial in the family lot in Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery.  Mr. Church died Monday, March 10, 2003, at his residence in Habersham Terrace West.  Born on Dec. 28, 1915, he was the son of the late Cornelius E. and Callie Hames Church. He served in the U.S. Army, was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star, was a 32nd degree KCCH Scottish Rite Mason, was a member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple and was an Emeritus member of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge No. 325. Mr. Church was a member of Clarkesville Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer and Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.  Mr. Church worked in the family appliance store and service station. His father started the Church Funeral Home in the 1930s in the upstairs of the family store.  Mr. Church was a 1939 graduate of Gupton Jones School of Embalming in Nashville, Tenn.; he received an AA grade on his state board exam in Georgia, and was past president of the Academy of Graduate Embalmers of Georgia.  In 1939, Mr. Church joined his father in the funeral home. In 1950, the Church and Son Funeral Home was constructed as the first funeral home outside of Atlanta to be built as a funeral home from the ground up. Mr. Church and his father ran the funeral home until the death of his father, Cornelius E. Church, in 1955.  Mr. Church continued operating the funeral home until February 2001, when his health began to fail. He then moved to Habersham Terrace West. The funeral home has been under the direction of Stanley H. Powell since then. Church and Son Funeral Home is the oldest funeral home in Habersham County.  Mr. Church was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Loggins Church; sister and brother-in-law, Tom and Fannie Head; and nephew, Edward Head.  Survivors include his nephew and wife, Paul and Tammy Head of Amelia Island, Fla.; and beloved friend and former employee who has served as his administrator for the past three years, W. M. Gilbert and his wife, Patsy, of Lavonia. Mr. Gilbert referred to Mr. Church fondly as “Pappy,” and had a special friendship that spanned more than 50 years.  Memorials may be made to Children’s Health Care Foundation of Atlanta, formerly Scottish Rite Hospital, 1001 Johnson Ferry Rd. Mrs. Mary J. Church, age 84 years, died at her home in Clarkesville on Dec. 18th and was buried at the new cemetery on the 19.  Rev. L. B. Linn officiating.  Mrs. Church was a consistent member of the Methodist church here and is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. W. Hames and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services for Nimmo L. Church, 92, of Clarkesville were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Billy Burrell and the Rev. Paris Whitworth officiated, with burial in Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery.  Mr. Church died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness.  Born in Habersham County on July 24, 1911, he was the son of the late George T. and Essie Whitworth Church. DAWSONVILLE – Funeral services for Annie Collins, 96, of Dawsonville were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Bearden Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Harold Thompson officiated, with burial in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.  Mrs. Collins died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Willow Wood Nursing Center following a period of declining health.  A lifelong resident of Dawson County, she was born July 28, 1906, the daughter of the late Frank and Emma Gregory. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Collins. Mrs. Collins was the former owner of Mays Grocery in Ft. Valley for 17 years. Jack Lamb officiating at graveside.  Mrs. Crawford died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Stephens County Hospital.  Born May 23, 1912, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late Walter Grey and Sue E. Ledbetter Davis. She lived most of her life in Stephens County, was a homemaker and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Toccoa. She was an honorary member of the Horti-Floral Garden Club and was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde C. Crawford, and a daughter, Mary C. Charles.  Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Jack Smith of Toccoa; daughter, Sherry Pitts of Baldwin; son-in-law, Byard Charles of Toccoa; six grandchildren, Kerri Hogsed, Jacki Smith, Traci Stephens, Matt Charles, Amanda Queen and John Pitts; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.  The family will receive friends at Acree-Davis Funeral Home today, March 18, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.  Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 429 E. Funeral services for Homer James Deal, 76, of Gainesville, will be today, Nov. 21, at the Little-Davenport Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ron Barker officiating. Burial will be in the Clarkesville City Cemetery. Mr. Deal died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Born in Habersham County, Mr. Deal was the son of the late James Boliver and Emma Smith Deal. He lived in Hall County the past 40 years. He was retired from the Southern Railroad as a signal supervisor. He is preceded in death by his wife, Frances Geraldine Sutton Dale; and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Deal. Born on Nov. 19, 1924, in White County, he was the son of the late Wiley M. and Maybelle Thompson Dean. Mr. Dean was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, having served in the South Pacific in the 43rd Infantry; there, he earned and received the Purple Heart medal. Mr. Dean was a retired employee of Schnadig Furniture Manufacturing with 32 years of service. He was a long-time member of Chattahoochee Baptist Church. Born in Cornelia, she lived in North Georgia before marrying and moving to Atlanta, and was a member of Cornelia First Baptist Church. Mrs. deJarnette was retired from the Federal Record Center in East Point, where she served with distinction for many years. Mrs. deJarnette was a longtime member of College Park United Methodist Church prior to her move to Pensacola in 1990, where she transferred her membership to Perdido Bay United Methodist Church. She was active in the United Methodist Women and served as president of her local units on several occasions. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Jack deJarnette Sr. Survivors include her children and their spouses, the Rev. DEFIANCE, Ohio – Memorial services for George R. Dion, 80, of Defiance, Ohio, formerly of Habersham County, were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Dr. Todd Anderson officiated.  Mr. Dion died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at his residence.  Born in Boston, Mass., on Dec. 29, 1922, he was the son of the late George and Anna McGowan Dion. Mr. Dion was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.  Mr. Dion previously taught at Cardinton-Lincoln, Lima Shawnee and Bluffton school districts. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 3360, a member of Amvets No. 1991, a member of the American Legion in Clarkesville, a life member of Paper Workers’ Union of Atlanta, of the Clarkesville Masonic Lodge, and of the Zenobia Shrine in Toledo, Ohio.  Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marjorie Dion; daughters, Barbara Chamberlain of New Concord, Ohio, Laurie Lucas of Defiance, Ohio; sons, Richard Dion of Marshfield, Mass., David Dion of Atlanta; brother, Paul Dion of Cincinnati, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.  Memorials may be made to Hospice/Caring Way of Defiance Co.  Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home of Defiance, Ohio, was in charge of arrangements.  Submitted by Kim Gordon (Feb 2003)
Dixon, Allen Charles Sr.
Funeral services for Allen Charles Dixon Sr., 63, of Clarkesville were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. L.G. Howard and the Rev. Paul Flynn officiated, with burial in Harvest Christian Church Cemetery.  Mr. Dixon died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.  Born in Habersham County on May 17, 1939, he was the son of the late Charlie Dixon. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rita Faye Dixon; and brother, Haven Dixon.  Mr. Dixon was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a truck driver and of the Baptist faith.  Survivors include his daughters, Myra Broome of Gainesville, Vivian Turner of Alto; son, Allen C. Downer, Harry Lee
Funeral services for Harry Lee Downer, 67, of Cornelia will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at Mountain View Baptist Church. The Rev. James Harvey, the Rev. Racheo Lacey and Michael Welch will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Downer died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness. Born in Lilesville, N.C., on March 3, 1935, he was the son of the late Joe and Maggie Bailey Downer. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Downer. Mr. Downer was retired from Habersham Hardware Home Center as the paint store manager with 32 years of service. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Patsy English Downer of Cornelia; daughter, Pam Kinney of Cornelia; sons, Thomas Mitchell Downer and William Douglas Downer, both of Cornelia, Brian George Downer of Mt. Mrs. DuBois died Sunday, May 26, 2002 at the residence of her foster parents in Gainesville following a brief illness. Duncan, George
Funeral services for George Duncan, 87, of Alto will be held today, May 21, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. Kenneth McEntire and the Rev. Scott Ledbetter will officiate with burial in the B.C. Grant Cemetery. Mr. Duncan died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness. Born in Carroll County on June 18, 1914, he lived most of his life in Habersham County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Gailey Duncan. Brian Stephens officiated, with burial in Fairfield Baptist Church Cemetery, Clarkesville.  Mrs. English died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Habersham County Medical Center.  Born in Franklin County on Oct. 6, 1910, she was the daughter of the late W.A. and Melvina Love McClure. Living most of her life in Toccoa, she was the owner and operator of English Grocery Store for more than 50 years. Mrs. Englis was a member of Fairfield Baptist Church. She was retired from North Georgia Technical College and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Born in Habersham County on June 9, 1930, he was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills and was a member of Cornelia Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Olivia Stamey; son, Claude Evans Jr.; brothers, Bill Evans, Clifford Evans; and sister, Evelyn Evans. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Fitzgerald Evans of Mt. Airy; sons, Alan Stamey of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Richard Wallace of Marietta, S.C.; sisters, Maggie Evans, Betty Lathan, both of Mt. Airy, Rose Lawrence of Anderson, S.C., Janie Lomax of Atlanta; and four grandchildren.
