Co. A, 52nd Regiment Infantry - Habersham Guards

52nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry

The 52nd Infantry Regiment was organized at Atlanta, Georgia in April of 1862. Many of its members were drawn from Fannin, Habersham, Towns, and White counties. The unit took part in the Cumberland Gap operation, then moved to Kentucky, and still later to Mississippi. In Mississippi, the unit was assigned to General Barton's Brigade, Department of Mississippi & East Louisiana, and was active in the conflicts at Chickasaw Bayou, and Champion's Hill.

At the fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, the 52nd was part of a garrison that was captured. After the battle, Gen. Grant was unable to provide for the large number of captives taken, and the unit was exchanged and assigned to General Stovall's Brigade.

The 52nd fought with the Army of Tennessee from Missionary Ridge to Nashville. Then on February 23, 1865, it was detailed to guard wagon trains from Columbus, Mississippi.  During December of 1863, the unit totaled 279 men and 197 arms. By November of 1864, there were only 123 men fit for duty. Finally, the few men that remained surrendered on May 4, 1865.

The field officers were: Colonels Wier Boyd & Charles D. Phillips, Lieutenant Colonel Solomon H. Van Diviere, and Majors J. J. Findley & John J. Moore.
