James K. Byers
JAMES KUYKENDALL BYERS, (b. 12/17/1805-d. 4/08/1885). Lt. James K. Byers was one of the sons of the Rev. Joseph Judson Byers(b.1/17/1780-d.7/27/1873) and Mary Ester (Polly) Kuykendall. James K. Byers was born in Buncombe County, NC.
James K. Byers married Ary Ann Burch in Rabon County GA, on 10/10/1929. Ary Ann was born 1/22/1813 in SC and was the daughter of Jarrett Burch and Emily Pinson. Her sister, Nancy Burch, married the brother of James K. Byers, Robert Byers.
By 1830 James K. and Ary Ann were living in Habersham County, GA. Their first son, Samuel Phillip Byers was born here on 1/01/1830. The following children were born to James K. Byers and Ary Ann in Habersham County: Mary Caroline Byers, b. 12/08/1834, Nancy Emily Byers, b. 12/08/1934, Robt. Jarrett Byers, b. 8/06/1837, Joseph Pinson Byers, b. 12/19/1839. James K. Byers and family moved to Union County, GA, about 1840, we think to what is present day Towns County, GA. James K.'s son, John Henry Byers, was born in Union (or Towns) County on 9/27/1842. James K. and family eventually settled in Alabama where the following children were born: James Francis Byers, b. 1/01/1848, Clarissa Jane, b. 7/08/1851, Amanda Frances, b. 12/25/1853.
In 1838, James K. Byers was listed as 2nd Lieutenant in the Habersham Militia. His brother, The Rev. Samuel Byers lived here at this time also. Later their nephew, Francis C. Byers, would settle in Habersham and become the forefather of the present day Byers family in Habersham.
