Information
The Genealogical Society of Henry and Clayton Counties, Inc. was formed in 1992 with the merger of Ancestors Unlimited of Clayton County and The Henry County Genealogy Association. Our headquarters is 71 Macon Street in McDonough, GA.

Our Family Research Library and Headquarters Building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is known as the Brown House because it was once a hotel owned by the Brown family. The building of the house was started in 1826 by Andrew McBride, a Revolutionary War veteran. It is one of the oldest surviving homes in Henry County. The Brown House was marked, June 23, 2007, by the Daughters of the American Colonist as a Historic Building.

In our library we have an abundance of information available for researching your genealogy.  We have much information on Henry County, GA as well as counties originating from Henry County. As you may know all or part of Fayette, DeKalb, Fulton, Newton, Rockdale, Butts, Spalding and Clayton came out of original Henry. Henry County was one of the original five counties covered by the 1821 land lottery. Until 1821 this area was Indian Territory.

We also have much information on other Georgia Counties and on other states, particularly South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. We have some international and immigration records also.

Our Library hours are Wednesday and Friday - 10 to 3. We are closed on all Legal holidays, and from the second Tuesday in December until the day after New Years. If you are from out of town or out of state and cannot be here when we are open, phone for an appointment and we will do everything possible to accommodate you. There is also a large Genealogy Room at the Clayton Headquarters Library on Battle Creek Road in Jonesboro, GA that is open all regular library hours.

We do research which is limited to the material available in the Brown House. There is a charge of $20.00 per surname. Queries in our publication are $2.00 each (limited to 50 words or less) to nonmembers.

Directions to the Brown House: From the North, or South take I-75 to exit 218 (State route 20/81)
