DEMPSEY/GRAY FAMILY CEMETERY
ESTABLISHED 1870’S

HISTORY:   William and Martha Gray settled directly behind what is now the Dempsey/Gray Cemetery, about one-half mile from the present location of Plainview Baptist Church.   The Gray Family was one of first three pioneer settlers in this area.  William’s daughter Margurett Ellen Gray married George W. Dempsey on January 28, 1858.   The fifth generation of the Dempsey/Gray Family live on the land today.

Robert “Bob” Mathis was a farmworker hired by William and Martha Gray. He died suddenly and was the first person buried in what became the Dempsey/Gray Family Cemetery.  William Gray reserved one acre of land around the graveyard for a burying ground in his Last Will and Testament filed in September 1894.

LOCATION:  130 Dempsey Loop SE Adairsville, GA (Gordon County).  Turn right off Highway 53 East onto Plainview Road.  Dempsey Loop is third road on the right.  It is located on the William E. (Bill) Dempsey Farm.

There are six unmarked graves, four of which are babies and young children of the Dempsey and Gray Families.   The fifth is the child of Betty Lula and W.T. Howell.  The other one is the grave of Bob Mathis.
