Calhoun Times, Gordon Co., GA, July 25, 1872

Thomas Munroe Montgomery

On last Friday while two little sons of one of the esteemed citizens of our county, Mr. William Montgomery, aged respectively about 15 and 17 yrs. old, were in the field ploughing, they started for home to escape a threatened rain storm. The mule upon which the eldest (Thomas Munroe) was mounted became frightened for some cause, throwing young Montgomery, and his foot became entangled in the gear, he was dragged a considerable distance, his body horribly mangled, and when the younger brother came upon him, disentangled the mangled body, life was found to be extinct.

Mrs. Montgomery Dead

Mrs. N.H. (Nancy) Montgomery, an old and most estimable lady of the upper part of the county died at her home, on March, the 1st. She was 82 years old, had lived most of her life in Gordon County. She moved to this county before the Civil War. Her husband Sam Montgomery died many years ago. She had been in good health until about four months ago. Seven children survive her, four sons and three daughters. J.F. (John) of New Mexico, K.W. (King) now of Chattanooga, Dr. A.J. (Andrew) of this county and J.R. (Jim) of Oklahoma. Mesdames J.O. (Ida) Porter and J.L. (Milkan) Davis of this county and Mrs. J.E. (Barbara) Love of Murray County. She had been a member of the Baptist church since her young womanhood. At the time of her death she was a member at Mt. Hermon. She was buried in the Montgomery family burying ground, Revs. Welch and Moore conducting the service.

Calhoun Times, Gordon Co., GA, October 1975

Mrs. John Neal Poarch

Mrs. John Neal Poarch, age 79, of the Carters Community, passed away at 9:40 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in Gordon Hospital. She was the former Miss Maude Montgomery and had been married 60 years to John Neal Poarch. She was the daughter of the late John and Molly McTeer Montgomery. She had spent her entire life in Gordon County and had been active in the Oakman United Methodist Church. Survivors include: her husband, John Neal Poarch of Carters; three daughters, Mrs. Aubrey (Johnnie Mae) Gazaway of Plainville, Mrs. W.G. (Jimmie Lou) Robertson of Calhoun, and Mrs. Charles (Mary Jean) Greene of Calhoun; one brother, C.P. (Chester) Montgomery of Lubbock, Texas; two sisters, Miss Gertrude Montgomery and Mrs. Winnie M. Durham, both of Tucumcari, NM; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Poarch were conducted at 4 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with the Revs. Floyd Wells and Ray Lott officiating. Charles T. Owens and Claude Nichols had charge of music. Pallbearers serving were John Gazaway, Thomas Robertson, Matthew Robertson, David Greene, Neal Greene and Jordan Tatum. Interment followed in Fain Cemetery.

 

 

Calhoun Times, Gordon Co., GA, November 1976

John Neal Poarch

John Neal Poarch, 91, a well known retired farmer of Route 1, Carters, Ga., died Friday evening in Cherokee Acres, following several months of illness. He was born in Gordon County, a son of the late Jim and Georgia Wilson Poarch. He was a member and steward of Oakman United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, the former Maude Montgomery, a year ago. Mr. Poarch is survived by his three daughters, Mrs. Johnnie Gazaway of Plainville, and Mrs. Jimmie Robertson and Mrs. Mary Jean Greene, both of Calhoun; a sister, Mrs. Sallie Black of Calhoun; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday at ? p.m. from the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Floyd Wells in charge. Burial was in the Fain Cemetery. Pallbearers included David Greene, Neal Greene, John Gazaway, Joe Poarch, Thomas Robertson and Matthew Robertson.

 

 

Calhoun Times, Gordon Co., GA, January 22, 1986

Mr. James S. Owens

Mr. James S. Owens, 56, of 320 Trammel St., Calhoun, died Friday (Jan. 17, 1986). Mr. Owens was a lifetime resident of Calhoun and Gordon County and was a son of the late Sam and Mae Montgomery Owens. Mr. Owens had formerly served as city of Calhoun superintendent for 10 years, and was a member of the Calhoun First United Methodist Church, and the Calhoun Hunter's Club. He also served as a director of the Calhoun First National Bank. Survivors include, his widow, Mrs. Kay David Owens of Calhoun; two daughters, Mrs. Diana Owens Layson of Calhoun and Miss Kim Owens of Norcross; a son, Mr. David (Monty) Owens of Calhoun; two brothers, Mr. George E. Owens and Mr. Don R. Owens, both of Calhoun; and four grandchildren. Funeral was at 3 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 19, 1986) from the Calhoun First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Randy Mickler and Bert Lance conducting the service. Pallbearers included, Calvin Caldwell, John Wayne Hall, Raymond King, David Lance, James Thomason, Harold Holliman, J.C. Maddox and Jack Knight. Honorary pallbearers included, Buck Prather, Gene Davis, Boyd Cochran, Board of Directors of the Calhoun First National Bank, and members of the Calhoun Hunter's Club. Interment was in Fain Cemetery.

 

 

Knoxville, TN, April 7, 1934

Aged Man Shoots Himself To Death

K.W. Montgomery Had Been Suffering From Ill Health

K.W. (King) Montgomery, 66, was dead today, believed a suicide victim of ill health and melancholia. Police Capt. Keisling said indications were that Mr. Montgomery sat before a mirror and fired the pistol ball thru his head. The shooting occurred last midnight at 1710 North Central Street, the home of his son, Sam Montgomery, with whom he lived. Family members said the shot aroused them about two hours after they had gone to bed. The heavy bullet penetrated the head, a hand supporting the head and a door beyond. Mr. Montgomery was found sitting in his bedroom chair. Mr. Montgomery had been home from the hospital only a few days and has long been ill. The coroner and police were notified. Chattanooga, TN, September 1924

Mrs. M.J. Montgomery

Mrs. Mattie J. Montgomery, wife of K.W. (King) Montgomery, died at the family residence, 4214 St. Elmo Avenue, Saturday morning about 2 o'clock, following a brief illness. The deceased is survived by her husband and one son, S.R. (Sam) Montgomery. She was a member of the M.E. Church, south of Calhoun, Ga. The body will remain at Wann's until Sunday morning, when it will be taken to Calhoun for funeral and interment. (*Fain Cemetery)

 

 

Calhoun Times, Gordon Co., GA, July 27, 1985

Mr. Samuel Montgomery

Mr. Samuel Montgomery, 92, of Ruskin, Fla., and formerly of Calhoun, died Thursday morning in Florida, following an extended illness. Mr. Montgomery was born in Gordon County, a son of the late King and Mattie Raby Montgomery. He had resided in Florida since 1952 and was a retired mechanic and a member of the Northside Baptist Church. He also was a member of the Desota Masonic Lodge No. 150, F-and-AM. Survivors include, his widow, Mrs. Virginia Montgomery of Ruskin; a stepson, two stepdaughters, 3 stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Fain Cemetery with Oothcalooga Lodge No. 154 in charge of graveside rites. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Clifford Free Funeral Home of Calhoun before the service.

Samuel A. Porter Dies at Savannah

Samuel A. Porter, 41, for more than 20 years an employee of the Central of Georgia Railway in Atlanta, died last Thursday night at 11:45 at the Central of Georgia hospital in Savannah. Mr. Porter was born and reared in Gordon County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.O. (Jim & Ida Montgomery) Porter. He joined the railroad in 1918 and had held several positions, including that of local freight agent. At the time of his death he was assistant Atlanta warehouse foreman. Surviving are his wife (Kathleen), his parents, and two brothers, J.H. (Heywood) Porter, of Washington, D.C., and J.F. (Ford) Porter, of Calhoun. Funeral services were conducted at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the chapel of Harry G. Poole in Atlanta by the Rev. W. Lee Cutts. A burial service was held at Mt. Pleasant Church, near his boyhood home, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Davis. Music was furnished by Neal's quartet, and cousins of the deceased acted as pallbearers. His co-workers from Atlanta formed an escort of honor. Interment was in the family lot at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Jackson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Joseph Heywood Porter

Mr. Joseph Heywood Porter, 77, of Route 1, Ranger, died Saturday at 6:45 p.m at the Gordon Hospital, following an extended illness. Mr. Porter was born in Oakman, June 30, 1902, a son of the late James and Ida Montgomery Porter, and had spent the greater part of his life in Gordon County. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Mr. Porter was married to the late Mrs. Lottie Stegall Porter who preceded him in death December 23, 1972. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech and various correspondence schools, was a Certified Public Accountant, practicing accounting for many years. He was associated with the Federal Reserve Bank as an examiner and had been a textile executive prior to his retirement in 1967. Survivors include several cousins and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Combs and Free Funeral Home, with Revs. Ewell Hardeman and Larry Stegall officiating. Interment was in the Fain Cemetery. Active pallbearers included, Curtis Welch, Fred Reddicks, Jerry Stegall, Garnett A. Spratlin, Morris Bryan III, and Tom Reddin.

Mr. Ira Porter Dies Near Oakman

Mr. Ira Porter passed away at his home near Oakman Sunday evening after having been in bad health for several years. He was 29 years old at the time of his death. Mr. Porter is survived by his wife (Sarah), his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.O. (Jim & Ida Montgomery) Porter, of Oakman, and the following brothers, Sam Porter, of Atlanta; Heywood Porter, of Calhoun, and Ford Porter. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 o'clock at the Mt. Pleasant Church with Rev. J.G. Kirckhoff officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The Masons were in charge of the services at the grave. E.L. Jackson & Son, funeral directors, were in charge of arrangements.

Ford Porter Dies Following Tues. Mishap

James Ford Porter, 45, former legislator and well-known Gordon County farmer, died Wednesday afternoon at the Gordon County Hospital from injuries received Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Porter was fatally burned when a fuel oil can exploded while he was refueling a tractor on his farm near Oakman. He was pouring fuel into the tank when a spark from the running engine ignited it and spread flames over his entire body. His burns were described as "99 per cent." The mishap occurred about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Porter died at 2:15 Wednesday afternoon. A native Gordon Countian, Mr. Porter was born on July 10, 1911. He attended schools in Gordon and Cobb Counties, graduating from Seventh District A and M School at Powder Springs. Following graduation, he taught school in Gordon County for two years before entering Wilson College of Law in Atlanta. He received an LL. B degree and was admitted to the practice of law in 1935. He was active in the practice of law and in farming at the time of his election as Gordon County representative to the General Assembly in 1942. Mr. Porter served two consecutive terms, 1943-46. For the past few years, he devoted full time to farming. Mr. Porter was affiliated with the Methodist Church, a mason and a member of the Georgia Bar Association. Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Margaret Norton; father, J.O. Porter; and brother, J.H. (Heywood) Porter of Atlanta. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at Combs Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Paul Currie officiating. Burial was in Chandler Cemetery. Pallbearers serving were Ford Holbert, J.W. Evans, Paul Burgess, Dr. W.D. Hall, Gene Fagala and Willie V. Owen.

 

 

Chatsworth, Murray Co., GA, April 22, 1935

Mrs. J. E. Love

Mrs. J. E. (Barbara Montgomery) Love, of Eton, died at the hospital in Dalton yesterday after a long illness and was buried at Mt. Zion Methodist Church, near Chatsworth, this afternoon. Rev. Legg, of Oakman, and Rev. Walter Harper, of Eton, officiated. Mrs. Love leaves her husband and four daughters, Mrs. Amos (Linnie) Keith, Mrs. Reuben (Pauline) Keith, and Miss Rachel Love, of Eton, and Mrs. C.A. (Mamie) Doster, of Atlanta; three brothers, Dr. Andrew Montgomery, of Oakman; John Montgomery, of Tucumcari, NM; Jim Montgomery, of Texas; two sisters, Mrs. John (Milkan Montgomery) Davis, of Carters, Ga., and Mrs. J.O. (Ida Montgomery) Porter, of Oakman. Strainge Funeral Home in charge.

Dr. A.J. (Andrew), 70, died at his home in Resaca, Ga., Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Cleo Montgomery; two brothers, John of New Mexico and Jim of Texas; two sisters, Mrs. J.O. (Ida Montgomery) Porter and Mrs. J.L. (Milkan Montgomery) Davis, both of Calhoun, Ga. Funeral services will be conducted from the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock (Georgia time), with Revs. J.L. Clegg and J.B. Godfrey of Dalton officiating. Burial in Fain Cemetery at Calhoun. Kenemer Brothers, Dalton, in charge.

Mrs. Cleo M. Montgomery

Mrs. Cleo Moore Montgomery, 78, of Valley Drive, Dalton, died Tuesday (Aug. 27, 1985) in Hamilton Medical Center of Dalton. She was a daughter of the late William J. and Ethel Manis Moore and the widow of Dr. Andrew J. Montgomery. She was a Baptist and was a former resident of Gordon County. Survivors include, two brothers, D.V. and Ray Moore, both of Dalton; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rembert Moore of Calhoun, Mrs. Austrell Moore of Naples, Fla., and Mrs. Ray Moore of Dalton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral was at 2 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 28, 1985) from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Rev. Griffin Crumbley conducting the service. Pallbearers included, Billy Scott, Jimmy Brown, Gary Moore, Robert Pittman, Willis Mashburn, and Bobby Mashburn. Interment was in Fain Cemetery.

Final Rites For Mrs. John Davis Sunday Afternoon

Funeral services for Mrs. Milkan Montgomery Davis, Carters, Route 1, were held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the chapel of Combs Funeral Home with the Rev. B.H. Berrier officiating. Music was furnished by Walraven quartet. Pallbearers were Hugh Don Davis, George Owens, Grady Moore, Bob Thompson, J.D. Baxter, Bill Robertson. Burial was in Fain Cemetery. Mrs. Davis died at the Gordon County Hospital Friday at 11:15 p.m. following an illness of several weeks. She is survived by her husband, John Davis; three sons, Jack Davis, Carters, Noah Davis, Ranger, and Buster Davis, Calhoun; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Lord, Ranger, Mrs. Clyde Nesbitt and Mrs. Pauline Davenport, both of Calhoun; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

John L. Davis Dies Tuesday

Funeral services for John L. Davis were held Wednesday afternoon at the chapel of Combs Funeral Home. Mr. Davis, 88, died early Tuesday morning following a long illness. He was a  retired farmer of Carters, Ga. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Lord of Ranger; Mrs. Clyde Nesbitt and Mrs. Pauline Davenport, both of Calhoun; three sons, Noah of Pleasant Hill Community, Buster of Calhoun, and Jack of Carters, Ga; one sister, Mrs. Jim (Ellen) Glass of Gainesville, Ga. 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Dewey Casey with the music arranged by Charles T. Owens. Pallbearers included Ben Willis, Paul Fite, Bob Thompson, Aristo Owens, Woodrow Johnson, Grady Moore. Burial was in the Fain Cemetery.

Mrs. Luke Thompson Dies January 12th

Mrs. Luke (Floy Davis) Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. (Milkan Montgomery) Davis, died on January 12, 1923, and was buried January 14th. Mrs. Thompson resided near Thompson's Ferry, and is survived by her husband and one child (Ruby). Funeral was held from the home. (*Buried at Thompson Family Cemetery, Gordon Co., GA)

Mr. Luther (Luke) J. Thompson

Mr. Luther (Luke) J. Thompson, 84, of Carters, died Wednesday June 21 at 11 a.m. in the local hospital, following eight days illness. He was born in Gordon County, a son of the late John M. and Nancy L. Wofford Thompson. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of Evergreen Baptist Church and a retired farmer. He was a Mason and member of the Coosawattee Lodge No. 306, Eastern Star and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Floy Davis Thompson, two brothers, John and Sylas Thompson and a sister Mrs. Maudie Mae Craig. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Fuller of Calhoun; a brother, Robert (Bob) G. Thompson of Route 1, Ranger; four sisters, Miss Allie Thompson of Route 4, Chatsworth, Mrs. Ben (Rosa) Willis of Route 4, Chatsworth, Mrs. Kate Tanner of Resaca, and Mrs Emory (Nancy) Weaver of Titusville, Fla.; three grandsons, Frank L. Fuller, Victor L. Fuller and Stephen Michael Fuller, all of Florida. Funeral was Saturday June 24 at 2 p.m. from Evergreen Baptist Church with Revs. C.T. Ivey and Graden Strickland officiating. Charles T. Owens was in charge of the music. Pallbearers were Steve Fuller, Vic Fuller, Frank Fuller, Lewis Couch, Roy Hammontree, David Owens, Carter Swanson and Larry Nations. Members of the American Legion served as honorary pallbearers. Interment was in Thompson Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by members of the Coosawattee Lodge 306.

Mr. Noah Lee (Joebird) Davis

Mr. Noah Lee (Joebird) Davis, 77, of the Pleasant Hill Community, Route 1, Ranger, died Monday morning, Aug. 8, at 8:45 a.m. at Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, following an extended illness. Mr. Davis was born June 25, 1900, a son of the late John L. and Milkan Montgomery Davis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie (Kit) Davis on October 2, 1975. Mr. Davis is survived by a son, Boyce (Tommy) Davis of Smyrna; three grandchildren, Larry and Pat Davis, both of Smyrna, and Dwight Davis with the U.S. Air Force in Germany; two great-grandchildren, Leslie and Arthur Dwight Davis Jr.; three sisters, Mrs. Clyde Nesbitt and Mrs. Pauline Davenport, both of Calhoun, and Mrs. Dorothy Lord of Marietta; two brothers, Buster Davis of Sugar Valley and Jack Davis of Carters; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Tuesday at 4 p.m. from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Revs. Lamar Bearden and Graden Strickland officiating. Music was arranged by Charles T. Owens. Pallbearers serving included Marvin Fite, Ford Davis, Mike Nesbitt, Gene Davis, Phil Sloan, Fred Campbell, Hugh Don Davis and Samuel Lord. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Jennie Lois Davis

Mrs. Jennie Lois (Kit) Davis, age 74, of the Pleasant Hill Community, Route 1, Ranger, passed away Thursday, Oct. 2, at 6:30 a.m. following a short illness. She was born Feb. 7, 1901, in Gordon County, daughter of the late Henry Clay and Flora Walraven Nesbitt. She was of the Baptist faith and resided her lifetime in Gordon County. Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband, Noah Lee Davis, of Route 1, Ranger; one son, Boyce (Tommy) Davis of Smyrna; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Hogan of Calhoun, two brothers, Bob Nesbitt of Calhoun and Lib Nesbitt of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; three grandchildren, Larry Davis of Smyrna, Dwight Davis of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Patricia Davis of Smyrna. Two great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Lois Davis were held Friday, Oct. 3., at 4 p.m. from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Lamar Bearden officiating, assisted by the Rev. Graden Strickland. Music was arranged by Charles T. Owens and Mrs. Pauline Davis. Pallbearers serving included Gene Davis, Ted Dutton, Mike Nesbitt, Marvin Fite, Roy Lane Davis, Phil Sloan and Haywood Pack. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Clyde Nesbitt

Mrs. Clyde Nesbitt of Calhoun, died Friday evening at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in Dalton following several weeks of illness. She was born in Gordon County, a daughter of the late John L. and Milkan Montgomery Davis. Mrs. Nesbitt was a member of the Sequoyah Chapter 286 Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Nesbitt, and a daughter, Mrs. Snippy Sloan. Mrs. Nesbitt is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Andrew (Betty) Hooper of Chattanooga, and Mrs. Willard (Sammy) Barton of East Ridge, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Scott (Dorothy) Lord of Marietta, and Mrs. Pauline Davenport of Calhoun; two brothers, Jack Davis and Buster Davis, both of Gordon County; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Rembert Moore officiating. Music was arranged by Mrs. Avanell Mealor. Pallbearers serving included D.V. Moore, G.W. (Junior) Edwards, Larry Bone, Eddie Fair, Bob Thompson and Lloyd Bowen. Burial was in the family lot at Fain Cemetery.

Robert H. (Bob) Nesbitt

Robert H. (Bob) Nesbitt, age 82, passed away in an out-of-town nursing home Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 12, at 2:10 p.m. following several months of declining health. Mr. Nesbitt was born in Gordon County Feb. 20, 1893, son of the late Henry Clay and Flora Walraven Nesbitt and had spent his entire life in Gordon County. He was married to the former Clyde Davis. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Snippy Sloan and a granddaughter, Tara Lynn Sloan. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Clyde Nesbitt of Calhoun; two daughters, Mrs. Sammy Barton and Mrs. Betty Hooper of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one sister, Mrs. Race (Ruth) Hogan of Calhoun; grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Nesbitt were held Friday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. from the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Rembert Moore officiating. Mrs. Junior Sloan, age 38, died early Saturday morning from injuries received in an automobile accident north of Marietta. She was born and reared in Gordon County, the former Snippy Edith Nesbitt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Nesbitt of Calhoun. Survived by her husband; two sons, Phil and Joe Sloan, three daughters, Pat, Gail and Jan Sloan, all of Resaca, and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Nesbitt; two sisters, Mrs. A.M. (Betty) Hooper and Mrs. Willard (Sammy) Barton of Chattanooga. Tara Sloan, age 2 years, died Saturday afternoon of injuries received in an automobile accident north of Marietta Saturday morning. Survived by her father, Junior Sloan; two brothers, Phil and Joe Sloan; three sisters, Pat, Gail and Jan Sloan, all of Resaca, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Nesbitt of Calhoun. Double funeral services for Mrs. Junior Sloan and daughter Tara Sloan were conducted Monday at 4 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Garrett and Rev. E.F. Cobb officiating. Charles T. Owens and Mrs. Carolyn Hayes had charge of the music. Pallbearers for Mrs. Sloan were Everett DeFoor, Floyd "Sport" Holcomb, Jerry Smith, Claude Farmer, Troy Casey and Morris Fair. Interment in Mt. Zion church yard cemetery. Pallbearers serving for Tara Sloan were Jack Holland, Clem Holland, Alton DeFoor and Robert E. Robbins. Interment in Mt. Zion church yard cemetery.

Mr. Andrew E. (Buster) Davis

Mr. Andrew E. (Buster) Davis, 76, of Route 4, Sugar Valley Road, Calhoun, died Saturday at 9:30 p.m. in Redmond Park Hospital in Rome, following an extended illness. Mr. Davis was born in Gordon County, Dec. 2, 1907, a son of the late John and Milkan Montgomery Davis, and had spent his entire life in Calhoun and Gordon County. He was a member of the Evergreen Baptist Church and before retirement was engaged in farming. Survivors include, his widow, the former Miss Pauline Walraven, to whom he was married in 1927; a son, Gene Davis of Route 4, Calhoun; a brother, Jack Davis of Chatsworth; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Davenport of Calhoun and Mrs. Dorothy Lord of Marietta; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral was Monday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Combs and Free Funeral Home with Rev. Howard Duvall conducting the service. Pallbearers included, Billy and Kim Muse, M.E. Bradley, Jackson Davis, James Mealor and Larry Boone. Interment was in Fain Cemetery.

Mrs. Pauline W. Davis

Mrs. Pauline Walraven Davis, 81, of Route 4, Sugar Valley Road, died Thursday (April 23, 1987) at 5:30 p.m. in Redmond Park Hospital of Rome, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Davis was born in Gordon County, June 24, 1905, a daughter of the late Walter and Callie Marett Walraven, and was a life-long resident of Gordon County. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew "Buster" Davis, in January, 1984; and by two brothers, Buck and Malcolm Walraven. Survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Mary Emma (Coley) Davis of Calhoun; two sisters, Miss Lois Walraven of Oakman and Mrs. Arnold (Becky) Baxter of Resaca; a brother, Claude Walraven of Calhoun; five grandchildren, Angela Padgett and Jerry, Jim, John and Tom Davis, all of Calhoun; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral was Saturday (April 25, 1987) at 4 p.m. from the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with Revs. Tommy Crider and Randy Mickler conducting the service. Music was arranged by the Owens Family. Pallbearers included, Jerry Davis, Jim Davis, John Davis, Tom Davis, Troy Padgett and Kenneth Walraven.

Mr. Gene Davis

Mr. Gene Davis, 68, of Calhoun died Saturday, Dec. 16, 1995, at 4:55 a.m. at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, following a brief illness. He was born in Gordon County on Nov. 13, 1927, son of the late Andrew E. (Buster) Davis and Pauline Walraven Davis. He was a Baptist, a member of Coosawattee Masonic Lodge No. 306 F&AM, and a retired Lockheed employee with 37 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Mary Emma Coley Davis; four sons, Jerry, Jim, John and Tom Davis; a daughter, Angela Padgett; and eight grandchildren, all of Calhoun. Funeral was Monday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home, with the Revs. Ed Padgett and Tommy Crider officiating. Burial was in Fain Cemetery, with Coosawattee Lodge in charge of Masonic graveside rites. Pallbearers were Ed Harkins, Lawrence Moss, Ed Childers, Kenneth Ponders, and Ralph Wyatt. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Hall, James Mealor, Emit Bradley, Don Owens, George Owens, Buck Prather, J.T. Thomason, Zeb Thompson, Johnny Mack Thompson, Marvin Fite, Lonnie Warren, Milton Knight, and Thurman Owens. Thomas Funeral Home of Calhoun was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pauline Davenport

Mrs. Pauline Davis Davenport, 90, of Calhoun died Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at Gordon Health Care Center, following an extended illness. She was born on Nov. 28, 1912 in Gordon County, daughter of the late John and Milkan Montgomery Davis. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Oothcalooga Order of the Eastern Star Chapter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Davenport, on Nov. 21, 1967; five brothers, Andrew "Buster" Davis, Noah Davis, Bill Davis, Gordon Curtis Davis, and Jack Davis; and two sisters, Clyde Nesbitt and Floy Thompson. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Larry Black of Calhoun; a sister, Dorothy Lord of Marietta; one granddaughter, Lisa Roberts of Calhoun and one great-granddaughter, Sayre Elizabeth Black; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral was Wednesday, May 28 at 3 p.m. from the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home, with Dr. John Allen officiating. Interment followed in Fain Cemetery, with the Rev. Eddie Brannon in charge of the graveside rites. Nephews served as pallbearers, including Phil Sloan, Tommy White, Sam Lord, Rob Thompson, Scott Gardner, Jim Davis, John Davis, Jerry Davis, John Hill, Jerry Hill, Tom Davis, and David Seaborn. Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home of Calhoun was in charge of arrangements.

Jack R. Davenport

Jack R. Davenport, age 51, of Hazel St., Calhoun, passed away at his home early Wednesday morning, Nov. 22, following a heart attack suffered a few minutes earlier. Mr. Davenport was born in Fannin County Dec. 30, 1915, son of Mrs. Florence Davenport Hill and the late C.B. Davenport of Oakman. He was a member of the Oakman Baptist Church, member of Coosawattee Lodge No. 306 and Eastern Star Coosawattee Lodge No. 475. He was employed by Hiwassee Land Co. for the past 12 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pauline Davis Davenport; one daughter, Mrs. Larry (Jean) Black of Calhoun; one granddaughter, Lisa Black; mother, Mrs. Florence Davenport Hill of Oakman; four sisters, Mrs. Ben (Colleen) Clarke of Atlanta, Mrs. Bob (Edna) Thompson of Oakman, Mrs. Ralph (Gladys) Taylor of Calhoun and Mrs. Hoke (Austrell) Moore, Immopalee, Fla.; one brother, Clinton Hill of Etowah, Tenn. Funeral services were held from the chapel of Combs Funeral Home Friday at 3 p.m., the Rev. R. T. Jordan officiating. Pallbearers were Dock and Ray Sisson, Kenneth and Ray Pass, Gene Davis and Curtis Welch. Music was arranged by Charles T. Owens. Burial in Fain Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were employees of Hiwassee Land Co.

Mr. Jack Davis

Mr. Jack Davis, 72, of 182 Davis Road, N.E., Resaca, died Saturday at his residence, following an extended illness. Mr. Davis was born in Gordon County, Nov. 25, 1916, a son of the late John L. and Milkan Montgomery Davis, and had spent his entire life in Gordon County. He was Baptist and was a veteran of World War II. Before retirement, he was a farmer and a carpenter and was a member of the Pine Chapel Masonic Lodge. Survivors include, two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Poarch and Mrs. Carolyn Dockery, both of Calhoun; three sons, Charles Ray Potts of Boling Brook, Ill., and Roy and Jackson Davis, both of Resaca; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Davenport of Calhoun and Mrs. Dorothy Lord of Marietta; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 1, 1989) from the Combs Chapel of Free Funeral Home with Revs. Roy Smith and Foy Bailey conducting the service. Pallbearers included, Buel Willis, David Brown, Doug Smith, Tommy Thompson, and Glenn and David Burchett. Honorary pallbearers included, Gene Davis, Ben Willis, Jerry Thompson, Clyde Davis, Herbert Lee DeFoor and Rev. Houston Allen. Interment was in Chandler Cemetery with Clifford Free Funeral Home of Calhoun in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lurlene Davis, 61, Route 4, Chatsworth, died Monday, May 21, at Gordon Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Bartow County, the daughter of the late CordaLee and Lillie Bell King Perkins. A Baptist, she had spent the greater part of her life in Gordon County. At the time of her death, she was associated with O'Jay Mills of Calhoun. Survivors include her widower, Jack Davis, Route 4, Chatsworth; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Poarch, Calhoun, and Mrs. Carolyn Dockery, Route 4, Chatsworth; three sons, Charles Ray Potts, Boling Brook, Ill., and Roy Lane Davis and Jackson Lee Davis, both of Route 4, Chatsworth; her stepmother, Mrs. Ida Perkins, Armuchee; one brother, William H. Perkins, Armuchee; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Baker, Marietta; nine grandchildren; two great-grandsons; five aunts and uncles, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 23, from the chapel of Combs and Free Funeral Home with the Revs. Graden Strickland and Clifford Free officiating. Interment followed in Chandler Cemetery. Charles T. Owens had charge of the music. Active pallbearers included Gary Perkins, Ronnie Dodd, Jim Davis, Gene Davis, and Robert Bartownfield. Honorary pallbearers included Dr. W.D. Hall, Agnes Henson, Tolbert DeFoor, Joe Chadwick, and Ted Collins. Combs and Free Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Carolyn Dockery

Mrs. Carolyn D. (Davis) Dockery, 54, of Calhoun died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003 at Redmond Regional Medical Center of Rome. She was born on July 23, 1949 in Gordon County and worked for the Gordon County School System as a dietician for 15 years, last working at W. L. Swain Elementary School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Lurlene Perkins Davis. Survivors include her husband, Lester J. Dockery of Calhoun; a son, David E. Dockery of Calhoun; brothers, Charles Ray Potts, Roy Lane Davis, and Jackson Lee Davis, all of Resaca; a sister, Patricia G. Poarch of Calhoun; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. from the Calhoun Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home, with the Rev. Donald Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in Chandler Cemetery. Ponders Funeral Home, Calhoun Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Scott Lord

Mr. Scott S. Lord, 73, of Marietta died Friday, March 18, 1994. He was retired from Lockheed after 33 years as a flight test mechanic and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy "Dot" (Davis) Lord, to whom he was married for 51 years; a daughter, Sarah Gardner of Marietta; a son, Samuel S. Lord of Lilburn; a sister, Billie Hamrick of Ranger; a brother, Homer Lord of Watkinsville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Funeral was Monday, March 21, at 2 p.m. from Castellaw Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Raymond King officiating. Burial was in Georgia Memorial Park.
