Forsyth County - Marriages

Marriages

The definitive book on Forsyth County Marriages is "Forsyth County, Georgia, Marriage Records" by Ted O. Brooke. This book covers Marriage Books "A" through "H", 1833-1933. It is available at the website of the author and can be found on the books page of this site.

I have personally transcribed Marriage Book "I" between 1933 and 1947. I will do lookups of this books on request. Please visit the lookups page on this site to request this.

I don't know if this is the same family, but Goodwin and Graham operated stores in Forsyth County in the early days. There was one in Cumming and one at what was later know as Settles Bridge. The partner Graham probably built the Terry Settle House, the oldest original part.

A romantic wedding occurred at the parsonage of St. Paul's Church on East Fair Street this morning at 10 o'clock, in which H.C. Williams of Cumming was united in marriage to Mrs. B.M. Stiff of this city. Mr. Williams has been surveyor of Forsyth County for 13 years and, in spite of his three score years, is as hale and erect as when he marched to the altar with his first bride 30 years ago.
Last summer Mr. Williams walked into the store of Captain Cook in Gwinnett County to make some purchases. When he had finished, the storekeeper suggested that he buy a dress for his wife. He replied that his wife had been dead for several years, but that if Captain Cook would procure him another one he would marry her. Captain Cook took up the matter seriously and wrote to Mrs. Stiff that night.
The letter arrived in due time and was answered. Then other letters were exchanged, and an engagement was the result. Mr. Williams did not meet his bride until last evening.
"I courted my first wife for several months," said the groom this morning, "And then found out that after I had married that I knew nothing on earth about her, so I thought I would not waste so much time at my second courtship." The couple left this afternoon for their future home near Cumming.
Mrs. Williams appears to be several years the junior of her husband.---The Atlanta Journal. Thursday, May 9.
