Dewey Wilkerson Dies; Funeral rites Saturday
Dewey T. Wilkerson, 69, of the Calhoun Road died Thursday in a Rome hospital
following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Waco, Texas, Dec. 27, 1902. He was the son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. G.W. Wilkerson. He owned and operated the Merriam Coal Company for a number of
years prior to his retirement in 1964.
He was also a member of the Friendship Baptist Church where he had served as
treasurer for 25 years and as chairman of the board of deacons for several terms. He was a past president and honorary member of the Rome Civitan Club, and a former member of the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, the former Bertha Alma Green, to whom he was married
Nov. 28, 1920; three daughters, Mrs. James B. Harper, Jr. of Columbus, Mrs. Millard
R. Allen of Rome and Mrs. Linton F. Angle of Claremore, Okla; two brother, George
Wilkerson of Cedartown and Edgar Wilkerson of Miami, Fla.; five sisters, Mrs. Early
Burkhalter, Mrs. Seward Holland and Mrs. Z.G. LaFerre, all of Cedartown, Mrs. Carl
Jones and Mrs. Freeman Popham both of Taylorsville; five grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Friendship Baptist Church
with the Revs. Amos Mashburn, Frank Bradley and Jerry Norwood officiating. Interment
will be in East View Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Joe Willamon, Hugh Hubbard, Jim Green, Linwood Daniel,
Nathan Davis, Jack Ford, Arthur Palmer and Ralph Wilson.
The body will lie in state at Daniel's Funeral Home where the family will receive
friends today from 7 until 8:30 p.m. The body will be moved to the church to lie in
state from 2 p.m. until the funeral hour on Saturday.
