Golden James Stevens, 56, affectionately known as "Goat" Stevens, prominent Rome Business man, died (January 26, 1957) in a
local hospital this morning following a three week illness. Mr. Stevens had been in poor health for several months and his
death followed an attack suffered eight days age. He resided in the Glenwood Apartments.
Born in Rome March 17, 1900, he was the son of the late R. G. and Martha Helms Stevens. He had spent his entire life in
Rome and for more than 40 years he had been associated with G. L. Hight. At the time of his death he was general manager of
the G. L. Hight Motor Co. Mr. Stevens was an ardent, sportsman and fisherman and was the owner of Lake Tight Squeeze in
Chattooga, County. He was married to the former Miss Anastasia D'Arcy who survives.
Surviving, beside his wife, are one daughter, Mrs. Billy Hackett, Rome, four sisters, Mrs. J. H. Kilgo, Miss Pearl Stevens
and Mrs. Edgar Davis all of Rome and Mrs. J. L. Gossett of Columbus; two brothers, Luther and Dewey Stevens, both of Rome;
three granddaughters, and several neices and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father Patrick C. Connell
officiating, Requeim Mass will be sung by the Childrens Choir of St. Mary's Church. Interment will follow in Myrtle Hill
Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited tonight at 8 o'clock at the chapel of Stevens Funeral Home. The following will serve as
active pallbearers; Fouche Hardy, Noel Alexander, Seab Salmon, Bruce Hamler, Dudley Foss, Albert Fahy, Dr. Walter Hackett and
A. W. Beaird. An honorary escort will be composed of the personnel of the G. L. Hight Motor Co. The body will remain at the
Stevens Funeral Home and the family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Hackett, 521 Cooper Dr.
