Mr. Abernathy
William Floyd Abernathy, Sr. 67, 400 Decatur St. died Thursday evening at
a Rome hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Abernathy was born in Cherokee County, Ala. Aug. 7, 1918, son of the
late William Otis Abernathy and Nancy J. Young Abernathy. He was a long-time
resident of Floyd County. Prior to his retirement in 1980, he was employed
by Griffin Foundry as a grinder for 40 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Abernathy was preceded in death by his wife, Pearlie Horn Abernathy, Feb. 7, 1980.
Survivors include a son, William Abernathy, Jr. Rome; eight daughters,
Mrs. Nancy Boston, Cedar Bluff, Ala., Mrs. Jo Ann Edwards, Kingston, Mrs. Barbara
Godfrey, Armuchee, Mrs. Sandra Barker, Mrs. Willie Wright, Mrs. Shirley Barker, Miss
Gail Abernathy and Miss Brenda Abernathy , all of Rome; a sister, Mrs. Lillian
Farmer, Rome; two brothers, Jay Abernathy and C. D. Abernathy, both of Rome; 16
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Chapel of
Jennings Funeral Home with the Rev. Jackie Brooks officiating. Interment will be at
Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Houston Farmer, J. L. Farmer, B. Farmer, Jack Hall, Jr.
Jeff Edwards and Robert Abernathy.
