JACKSON COUNTY, GEORGIA, NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS, JACKSON HERALD, 1883-1885
by Faye Stone Poss; [2767 Centerville Rosebud Road; Snellville, GA 30039. http://fayestoneposs.tripod.com/]
In the 1880s, railroads were expanded, and many people were either moving Westwardly, or South to Florida. Abstracts include "letters to home" from those who had moved, or other references to people who left Jackson County. These references can verify relationships to people in Jackson County. The new train routes made it easier for people in NE Georgia to visit other Georgia towns, or to visit their kinfolk who had moved. It was an exciting time of expansion!
This period of time was 18 to 20 years after the end of the Civil War and a noticeable difference was that many "colored" people were mentioned in the newspapers. No Georgia census records are available for 1890, therefore, the births and deaths mentioned in this book supplement known births and deaths for the period between the 1880 and 1900 census records. There were many deaths from consumption, pneumonia, typhoid fever, and particularly from the measles epidemic in 1885, as well as other diseases.
Abstracts include marriages, obits, legal notices, etc. The majority of articles referred to people in the counties of Jackson, Banks, Clarke, Franklin, Gwinnett, Hall, Madison, Oconee, Oglethorpe and Walton . . . but many other counties were mentioned. This is a great book, with much valuable information, for either historians or genealogists!
Book is: 8 ½ x 11", 354 + x = 364 pages, hardbound - $35.00. Full-name index and subject/place index.

JEFFERSON COUNTY

EARLY JEFFERSON COUNTY, GA, NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS, 1799 – 1811 by Faye Stone Poss, 2767 Centerville Rosebud Road; Snellville, GA 30039, http://fayestoneposs.tripod.com/
Jefferson County was created from Burke and Warren counties on 20 Feb 1796, with Louisville being the county seat, and also Georgia’s 3rd capitol from 1796 until 1807. The Louisville Gazette was Louisville’s first newspaper.
Abstracts contained in this book are legal notices, sheriff’s sales, some marriages and deaths, land defaulters lists, and miscellaneous articles. The settlers mentioned were mostly from the counties of Washington, Jefferson, Warren, Hancock, Burke, and a few from Tattnall and Jackson. As very little is available in early records for these counties, the Louisville newspaper was of particular value from a genealogical and historical standpoint.
