Enlisted early in the war and never came home once until the war was over. Captured by the federals at Fort Fisher (Wilmington) NC in Mar 1865. He filed for a confederate pension Dec 1913
BURNETT, John b. 1796 SC, near Waterboro, SC d. 1867 Buried in Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Eastern Echols in an unmarked grave. War of 1812; FL Indian War Served in: the War of 1812, enlisted as a private and served under Capt. William Thompson in the SC militia in Colleton District, SC; Indian War under Capt. John J. North; in the Florida militia under Capt. John Bryan, he volunteered at Camp North, October 1840, and served 3 months 25 days.
CORBETT, George W. Born-1830 - Death-1865 CSA - Georgia Militia-Army In the last year of the Civil War,when the call for youths and old men went out,Mr. Corbett enlisted in the Georgia Militia And went off to the scene of hostilities.He died early in 1865 on Hilton Head ILand,S.C.,While stationed there in the Conferderate Army.
CORBETT, Staten William b. 28 Feb 1937 Echols Co., Son of Warren R. (Tobe) and Carrie Pearl (Swilley) Corbett. Viet Nam U.S. Air Force from 04/22/1954 through 04/30/1976 as an Air Traffic Controller. Viet Nam Campaign from September 1972 through August 1973. Received the AF Bronze Star, the AF Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, etc. Retired from Civil Service with the National Guard Bureau at the Pentagon in Washington, DC on 02/29/1992.
CULPEPPER, Benjamin S. b.1839 Dooley Co. d. 1877 Echols CSA served in the 10th Florida Regiment (CSA) as 3rd Sergeant. He is buried at the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetary.
HENDRICKS, William Henry Clay b. 1843 d. 1922 Civil War Son of Nathan. Pvt, Co G, 1st Btn Ga Res (Symon's Ga Res), CSA.
HENDRICKS, John W. b. 1841 d. 1913 Civil War Son of Nathan. Co. I, 12 Regt. Ga Inf, CSA.
HENDRICKS, Nathan b. c1815 d. 1882 Civil War He enlisted in Staten's Co, 11 GA Cav, State Guards at Statenville, GA in August, 1863. Listed as 50y 0m old in late 1863 or early 1864 according to muster list.
KENT, James E., Sr. b. 21 Feb 1933 Echols Co. Korean Served in the U. S. Air Force from 1950 to 1971. During his career, he served in the Korean War during 4 campaigns. He is married to the former Carolyn June GODDARD of Valdosta.
KENT, Thomas J. b. Echols Co.,GA d. 1971 WW II Served in the U. S. Marines in the Pacific campaign during World War II. He was one of the four marines out of the battalion which secured Iwo Jima, able to walk off the island under his own power. He died in West Palm Beach, FL.
KENT, Warren Jacob b. 6 Jun 1895 d. 1976 WW I Born in Pavo, GA, he lived most of his adult life in Statenville and Lake Park. He served in the U. S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant under General "Black Jack" Pershing fighting in the Muess Argonne and Ardennes campaigns. He is buried at the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetary. He was married to the former Annie Mae CULPEPPER, daughter of Issac Franklin Culpepper, also of Echols.

Army (Infantry and Heavy Artillery)
Army Experiences: Left Echols County at age of sixteen years and joined the U.S. Army. Saw service at US-Mexico border, Philippines and France. He received Silver Star and Purple Heart Medals during WW1. He kept communications open for seven hours during a fierce battle, after being wounded from several rifle bullets and Musterd Gas over most of his body. A cassette is on file at the Statenville Library relating to his war experiences written and sung by his son, Paul Minton. He was Grandson of Joseph M. Minton and Rachel Jane Nobles Minton and grew up in their home at the "old Minton place" near Statenville, Ga.
The family of Joseph Andrew Minton has contributed several items to form a display in his Honor at the Echols County Historical Society Museum.

Highest Grade Seargent in World War II. In WW II Received WWII Victory Medal,American Service Medal,Pacific Service Medal,Good Conduct Medal,Distinguished Unit Badge with 1 Oak Leaf (Bronze) Cluster.
