Edmond Mathis
by Janine Rickner

[MATHIS, Edmond; b. 1776 in Sampson Co, NC; d. 1860 in Clinch Co, GA; buried at Prospect Church (grave unmarked); 4 children: Bunyan, John, Tyre, & Nancy.]
Edmond was the co-founder of the Wayfare Church (his name is mentioned on the historical marker along with his wife and his brother John) and his wife Unity Register/Mathis (b. 1778 in Sampson Co, NC; d/of John Register; d. 1853 in Ware Co, GA ~now Echols~) is buried there (unmarked grave). It is only one of many churches that he founded in the surrounding county area.
Edmond is a 3rd great uncle of mine. He and his two brothers, John & James, came to the area in about 1802 from Sampson Co, NC. Judge Folks Huxford wrote about the three of them in his "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" books, volume 1.
James Mathis is actually my direct ancestor. I'm originally from south Florida but had the pleasure of visiting your area (Echols Co., GA) this past April with my mom and sister. We visited the Huxford Library in Homerville and spent a whole day just cemetery hoppin'! It's really very beautiful country there. The pine trees are enormous!
