Dodge County was established on October 26, 1870 as Georgia's 134th county. It was formed from land coming from Montgomery, Pulaski, and Telfair Counties with a large amount of its population coming from Pulaski County. Eastman, the county seat is located 55 mile southeast of Macon,Georgia, with other incorporated towns being Chauncey, Chester, and Rhine. The land area of Dodge County covers 500.3 square miles. According to the 2000 U.S. census records, the population of Eastman was 5.440 and Dodge County was 19,171. The county was named for William Earl Dodge(1805-1883), a New Yorker who came to the area as a timber businessman and a major landowner. Mr. Dodge is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Eastman. Dodge County is very well-known as the "Candy Capital of the Georgia", due to the fact that Mr. Williamson Sylvester Stuckey and his wife Ethel, began the business in 1936 with a small roadside stand selling the best pecan candies in the nation which grew to become Stuckey's Candies. The residence of Mr. and Mrs. Stuckey still stands in the center of Eastman along U.S. Highway 23. The original location of Stuckey's Candies stands today as well and is known as Standard Candy Company. |
