OLD SOLDIERS COMRADES THROUGH LIFE AND IN DEATH

Moultrie, Jan.10.- Colquitt County lost two veterans of the civil war on Tuesday, they dying within a short time of each other. The two men fought in the same company during the war and came into Colquit County after it was over and were prominent figures in the upbuilding of the county. They lived within a few miles of each other and up until their last sickness had spent many hours in each other's company talking about the times they used to have while fighting for the cause of the South.

The two men were J. Nelson Phillips, of the Thigpen district and Solomon Hiers, of Berlin. The former was first to die, his demise occuring Tuesday afternoon about 3 o'clock while Hiers died at his home in Berlin about four hours later. The former was 91 years of age and the latter was over 80 years old. Both died at the homes of children.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife who is four years his junior and by 12 children, 10 of whom live in this county and two reside in Mitchell County. He came here many years ago from Coweta Co. and aided in the development of Colquitt County.

Solomon Hiers, who died a few hours after his former comrade in arms, was a little over 80 years of age, and was born and raised within a few hundred yards of Berlin, where he died. DEATH OF REV. E. H. BRYAN
One of Moultrie’s Oldest Citizens Passes Away.

Rev. E. H. Bryan passed away at his home on South Broad Street Sunday afternoon. He had been at the point if death since about ten days prior to this, when he was stricken with paralysis and the announcement of his death was no surprise to those who knew of his precarious condition. Mr. Bryan has been in bad health for about two years, during which time he has been mostly confined to his home. His death removes from this city, one among its oldest and most prominent citizens and from he county, one of its best known and most popular men.

Mr. Bryan has spent most his valuable life in preaching the gospel, and has at one time or another been pastor of nearly every missionary Baptist Church in the county. He was for a long time the pastor of First Baptist church, and did much to give to its present strength and prominence. He preached in a field in which the calling was not remunerative, and being forced to provide for his family otherwise, he has been very prominent in business and public affairs. He was at one time Clerk of Court of Colquitt County. It was to a very great extent the result of his efforts that brought the G. N. Railroad to Moultrie, and he was very active in the city’s early development. He leaves a wife and four children.

The Observer in common with the community at large mourns the loss of this highly esteemed citizen.
