John Washington8 Willis (Benjamin S. (IV)7, Benjamin (III) 6, Benjamin (II)5, Benjamin (I)4, Benjamin3, John2, Nathaniel1) was born 1803 in Bladen (or Cumberland) Co. N. Carolina (see notes on him), and died Bet. 1884 - 1885, Salem Baptist Church Tift/ Worth Co., Ga. He married Charlotte Matilda Calloway, August 24, 1826 in Irwin Co, Ga., daughter of David Calloway and Judith Tillery. She was born 1807 in Baldwin Co. Georgia., and died Bet. 1885 - 1889, Salem Baptist Church in Worth Co., Ga.

Notes for John Washington Willis:

  1. The tax digest of Irwin County, Georgia, on page 62 lists John Willis as a contributor for the years 1820 - 1830. Old settlers in Irwin County.
  2. He was brought to Telfair Co., by his parents when they moved there. When he was grown up he went across the Ocmulgee River into Irwin Co., Ga. to live. He was married there. They had thirteen children.
  3. Mr. Willis served as Justice of the Peace in 867th District of Irwin Co., Ga. 1851-54. The portion of Irwin he lived in was put into the new county of Tift in 1905. He lived near present Hickory Springs Baptist Church, and died in 1885 and was buried at Salem Baptist Church in Worth Co., Ga.; his wife died a few years later 1885 and was buried beside him.
  4. All nine of Johns' boys served as Confederate Soldiers in the Civil War. ALL returned home unharmed at the end of the war. It is very unusual for so many to enter the war and all be returned unharmed.

  4. Mr. Clark married again July 23, 1863, to Miss Cynthia Willis, born March 17, 1828 in Irwin Co., daughter of John W. and Matilda Calloway Willis. She died Feb. 14, 1908.
  5. Flourney Clark was baptized and united with the Clark Baptish Church in Montgomery Co., (now Wheeler Co.) on December 9, 1842. In October 1846, he converted to the Methodist faith and became very active in church work. He played an instrumental role in the incorporation of Weeks' Chapel and Leila Methodist Churches in Colquitt Co. He was a country preacher and suppplied pulpit appointments and preached at camp meetings.
  6. He owned lots of land 72 and 113 in 8th District which district was detached from Lowndes and placed in the new county of Colquitt in 1856. He served as Justice of Peace in 1020th district, 1856-1865, and in the 1184th district 1865-1869. He was one of the county's two delegates to the 1854 State Constitutional Convention. During the Civil War he served in the Georgia State Guards, a militia organization, enlisting Aug. 4, 1863, and became sergeant in Capt. Tillman's company, 11th Regiment. He represented Colquitt County in the 1865 State Constitutional Convention that voted to re-admit Georgia to the Union.
  7. In the 1864 State of Georgia Census - reorganizing the State of Georgia Militia - Colquitt Co., Ga. he is shown as 39 years old. He is shown as a Farmer who was born in Georgia; Exemption - Minister Justice of the Peace.
  8. Flourney died on May 23, 1880 at his home in what is now the Crosland District of Colquitt Co. Cynthia followed him to the grave on February 14, 1908. He and his two wives were buried in the Moultrie City Cemetery.

  1. James I. Gay of Ty ty Passes ---- 1951: James I. Gay, 62 resident of Ty ty Route 1, passed away in a local hospital Monday morning after an illness of three weeks. Death occurred at 9:30 o'clock. Mr. Gay was a farmer by occupation, and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Worth County, Ga. He was Born April 13, 1883.   1. George Gray married three times.

  2. ROCKY CREEK CHURCH - Burial site. This is an old church located a few miles north of Norman Park, Ga. It has old wooden benches and other wooden tables and all, it is a very unique church and one that reminds you of days past. The doors are always open and it makes you feel welcome as you enter its doors. The cemetery is close by and has quite a number of Grays and family members buried there.
  3. Served in the Confederate War 1862-1865. George told his father he wanted to volunteer for the war. His father gave him a horse, and he joined the Calvary, December 17, 1862 in Berrein County. He was in the 26t Reg. Co. H 4th. (Clinch's) Private in Georgia Infantry Calvary. He served until April 1865 and discharged in Scrims County, Ga. His company surrendered in 1865 in Scrinn county. George was present at the time. Union Officers paroled the ones who had already gone home when they found out the war was over. Therefore the reason for no parole or discharge papers for most of the men. George was wounded in the arm and shoulder in the war. After the war he moved to Colquitt County.
  4. George Gray died at home in the morning he had been ill for quite some time, had brights disease. Everyone who spoke of George Gray said he was a kind, tenderhearted, gentle man soft spoken. He was known as Uncle George to all, he was a good man to his family and to all who knew him.
  5. George drew a pension (applied for May 6, 1905) after the war of $60.00. He farmed all except for the time spent in the service. In 1892, he sold 100 acres of land for $400.00. He lived on this and his pension, he tried to farm but could earn very little in the later years because of illness, so he applied for the pension. On Jan. 19, 1917, at the time of his death a pension was due him of $70.00 from Colquitt County, and he was unpaid for 1917.
  6. After George's death, his third wife, Alice Willis, filed for his pension on February 24, 1917 and received it until her death in 1920. Alice couldn't write so she signed her application with an X. W. D. Willis was witness to her application for the pension and he was also present at her marriage to George Gray on March 5, 1896 in Colquitt County.

During the war if a man elected not to go in service he could pay a well bodied man to go in his place, if he could find one. Some of these men were paid as high as $500.00 back then.

George had a 12 acre farm and when the railroad wanted to go through his place he wouldn't give them the right of way, as he didn't want his children near the railroad tracks. One of the railroad owners gave him a place on further down the road of 250 acres in exchange for his place. One of the houses George Gray and his family lived in is still standing out on the Adel Highway, but it has been remodeled and added on to. The old place where he died was used as a storage place but has since been torn down.

Article in Moultrie Observer, Friday October 12, 1956, Section D, page 12; reads:
BELLED FOX CAUGHT BY Dr. Hitchcock.
A wild fox with a bell tied round its neck attracted a lot of attention around here in 1932. Dr. C. C. Hitchcock caught the animal, freed it of its neckband and turned it loose 22 miles from its habitat and caught it later near its home. The fox, when just a few months old, was a pet around the Gray farm in upper part of Brooks county. The Grays tied a bell around its neck and one day the animal ran away. It was caught several times and turned loose near its habitat of Brice's Pond before Dr. Hitchcock decided to bring it to Moultrie. The Dr. freed it of its Bell and let it rest for a few days before freeing it in the vicinity of Schley community. The fox took about a month to cover the some 20 miles to the swamps and fields where it was raised. When Dr. Hitchcock caught the animal again when he recognized it by the markings on its ears.

George Gray passed this poem on to Wiley Gray and then to me. Dad also tried to do as the poem said and as his father would have wanted him to do.

George W. Gray was 64 years old when Lula, was born. Georgia Alice Willis was 38 years old.
