Loretta is a great
person with a deft-hand for turning out needlework. She is also a
scrumptious cook. Many Milstead families have benefited from her and
husband Lyndon's kindness and generosity. These two people
create their own designs using threads, feathers, and flowers
lavishly. Each Christmas when others are decorating their tree with
boughs, lights and tinsel, their tree is decorated with hundreds of
handcrafted and designed trinkets. It is a sight to behold.
When Milstead Homeowners'
Association was organized in 1991, Lyndon was elected as Vice
President and Loretta became the acting treasurer. Lyndon,
an aggressive leader, began forming a work action committee. His
first act was to gain possession of the Milstead Riverside Cemetery.
It was overgrown and hardly recognizable. With county and local help
it was restored to a respectable condition. Forming a crimewatch for
the community, he was elected the leader. Milstead's first annual
craft day was organized with Jeff Owens as President.
Lyndon and his committee worked tirelessly for four months,
securing sponsors, entertainment. Many people helped to make it a
success.
He and Loretta, along
with members of the community, began in October planning the
Christmas lighting of Main Street for the first time. Earl Wood
made a video tape of the Christmas program and lighting. Frank
Smith was Emcee. People who helped with the project were:
William Johnson, Gloria Young, Mrs. Mark Mewborn, Jeff Owen, Tim
Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Green, Lyndon and Loretta Shaw, James Shaw,
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Stephenson, Billy and Jackie Crawford,
Ellen Hall and Evelyn Mathis. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers were
Chairman of the Committee and co-chairman of the Grimes and Yellow
River Street decoration program. Many other residents donated time,
money and equipment. The City of Conyers donated their old Christmas
decorations to get the program off to a good start.
In early spring of 1992,
Lyndon and Loretta began the beautification of the median of
Main Street. Before long, others joined in installing flowerbeds,
with a variety of spring flowers enhancing the attraction for people
traveling the Main Street in Milstead.
