Lilian Jackson Shaw, born in Henry County
in 1890, married James Shaw about 1906. She worked in the
Stewart Paper Mill on the Yellow River, the present site of the old
Milstead Textile plant.
She went to work at the tender age of 12 or 13,
before the child labor laws were enacted. My parents farmed in
around Henry County and did public work. The family was living in
Porterdale when the Father, James Shaw, died at age 42. Mrs.
Shaw worked in the Bibb Company mills around 1937 before leaving
that occupation and taking employment at the Conyers Pacific Overall
sewing plant.
In 1937, she went to work in the Milstead Plant
and moved to 1753 Green Street. When the houses were sold to company
employees, Lyndon, who was serving in World War II, learned
of the offer. He bought it for his mother. He and his wife,
Loretta, live there today. Lyndon came home from the war
and worked at Southern Bedsprings before going to work at Milstead
as a spooler room fixer. Later, he worked for Walker Owen Furniture
Company in Conyers as a repairman and account collector. His sisters
and brothers are Lenora, Louise, Eva Mae, Henry and Millie.
