Henry G. and Mattie Rooks were one of the pioneer families of Milstead. He married Mattie, a native of Walton County in 1898 and moved to Milstead in 1904. They were active in the Baptist Church, serving as deacon, teacher and various other positions. He was called 'Hammer' by his friends because he always carried a small hammer-hatchet. He was considered a master in the woodworking profession. Miss Mattie was known for her civic work in the community. She assisted the doctors and nurses with their work.

They had four sons; Bedford, William, George, and Ruply; and three daughters; Mrs. Willie Davis, Mrs. Reno Warren, and Mrs. Willie Kirkus.
