William MOODY was in the Company D, 56th Georgia Reg. during the Civil War. He enlisted at Big Shanty, Georgia May 1862. William was paid $50.00 12 MAY 1862 Crossroads, Georgia. He was wounded in the leg at the Battle of Vicksburg 1863. He was captured 4 JUL 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi and paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi 8 JUL 1863. William was captured Nashville, Tennessee 16 DEC 1864 and exchanged in 1865. Furloughed 1 FEB 1865 for 30 days at Tupulo, Mississippi. William could not return to command when furlough expired; consequently, he went to fight in the Battle of Atlanta and Jonesboro, Georgia.William was furloughed 23 JUL 1863 at Enterprise, Mississippi. William was dicharged April 12,1865 at surrender of Johnson's Army (militia) Kingston, Georgia. William was called "Uncle Billie" by many. The following is a letter written by Sergeat William Moody to Sarah L. Moody from Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1863. There was no punctuation in the original I added to make it easier to read. Everything else is the same. Vicksburg Trip May 2nd 1863 Dear, Wife, I seat my self to rite afew lines to let yo no that I am well at this time hoping that these few lines may find you and the children well and doing well. I received your letter last night dated April the 15th and I was glad to hear from you that you was all well. I hope you will get youre corn planted. I think shorely someone will be good enough to plant youre corn or let you have a horse to plant it your self. I can say to you that we got back to Vicksburg and I exspect we will leave hear in the morning to go to Warenton to stay three days. I can say to you that we have lost two of our company since we left hear it was John Hendrix and Thomas Tinsly we are morning the loss of our fellow solgers. But when our master call we have to go. Poor boys I hope they air better off then us. I can say to you that I am going to send you ten dollars in this letter and I want you to do the best you can with the money. I also sent you five dollars in a letter the other day. It will make in all $33.00 dollars I have sent to you since I have drawed and as soon as we draw again I will send you some more. I wish I had more to send now. I think we will draw in a short time. I am goin to send this letter by Jefry Sanders as he is going home. He will leave this letter at Larkin Stephens or at Nancy Fowler so you can get it. I should like to rite soon but I have not got time as we air cooking and have not got time to rite any more this time. Give my best respects to all friends and except this same for your self and family. So I will close. I remain youre loving husband till death. SGT William Moody To S. L. Moody
