NARA has released the 1940 Federal Census. The census is made up of 3.8 million images, scanned from over 4,000 rolls of microfilm.

Rather than duplicate the instructions here, I suggest you go directly to the web site and first read "GETTING STARTED". The instructions are easy to follow. It is also well worthwhile to read "CENSUS RESEARCH 101" . Reading both these links will help you on your way to finding your family. It will be helpful to know where your family lived, because the census is set up by enumeration districts. There are 41 districts for Carroll County numbered 22-1 thru 22-41 and each of these ED's contain up to 40 pages. There is a cross-reference to the 1930 census ED's so if you know where they lived in 1930 it will be very helpful. I have put the MAPS AND ENUMERATION DISTRICTS on line here to help researchers until the census is indexed in the future. At this time the census is not indexed by name but a number of organizations have formed to transcribe the census to build a name index. If you can help, contact any of the organizations direct.
