Reading from the Historic Marker located in front of the Church: "Owl Rock Church was founded in 1828 by Richmond Barge, Sr., and other members of the Mutual Rights faction(Protestant Movement)that withdrew from the Mount Gilead Methodist Episcopal Church. It is named for an eight foot natural rock closely resembling an owl (Identified by the Indians as the Owl Rock) which is to the rear of the building. (To the left, east side, of the Cemetery Driveway) This church has taken part in four (five) distinct phases of Methodism in Georgia: as an Associated Methodist Church, 1828-30; as a Methodist Protestant Church, 1830-1916; as a Methodist Episcopal Church, South, 1916-39; (as a Methodist Church, 1939-68; since 1968 as a United Methodist Church.) The Annual Conference session of the Methodist Protestant Church was held here in the year 1900. During the Battle of Atlanta many skirmishes were fought in
the area and the church is mentioned frequently in the Official
Records. Following the War Between the States the church sponsored
an elementary public school. In 1921 the Sandtown School was created
as a consolidation of the Owl Rock, Boat Rock, and Sandtown Schools."
We acknowledge with grateful appreciation all sources of information in the compilation of the Necrology of the Owl Rock Methodist Church Cemetery: No one has done more than JAMES MARVIN VARNER, who served so faithfully as the Pastor of the Owl Rock Church, 1958-1962, to record and preserve the history of the Church and Cemetery. To him we raise our voices in gratitude, as together we dedicate our efforts to the glory of God, and in memory of our loved ones, who compose the necrology of the Owl Rock Cemetery. From the "Varner Compilation" we have attempted to include family connections to the original generations as known. We solicit and covet any information you may be able-to contribute to later and revised editions. It is the goal of the Old Campbell County Historical Society that a history of the churches and a necrology of the cemeteries of "Old Campbell County" be edited and made available for all who are concerned. It is needful that we record and keep that which we know concerning our heritage. The young generations are asking questions important to them, and which we should be able to answer. Our neglect in keeping church and cemetery records is regrettable, and should constitute a challenge for us to mend our system of record keeping in every church. With the contribution of your interest and information from Family Bibles, letters and papers of record, and from personal knowledge, we look forward to future, and completed editions, of our family histories and heritage. Campbell, John July 13, 1900 - Aug. 5, 1901 (*Concludes the 7 children of John James and Mary Parker Campbell) To set forth the descendants of the John Campbell Line that are buried in the Owl Rock Cemetery, attention should first be given to the Campbell Family Cemetery near the old homestead of Perry and Rosa Belle Waits Stewart. Beginning at the intersection of New Hope Road with Campbellton Road, S. W., Atlanta, Fulton County; proceed on New Hope Road in the direction of Cascade Road, approximately .8 of a mile; turn left off New Hope on to Kings Lake Drive, (Kings Lake Subdivision), continue on Kings Lake Drive, with lake to the right, approximately 500 feet to a fire hydrant on the left. Looking west up a sloping embankment, large cedar trees will be noted. This is the location of the cemetery, covered in bramble and underbrush with no monument left standing. Reading from the monuments that could be uncovered, an impressive wealth of history and information is revealed: 1. Mary ( ? ) Campbell, the wife of John Campbell, buried beside him in the old cemetery, was born, circa April 30, 1803, and died Oct. 6, 1839; 36 years, 5 months, and 6 days old. John Campbell was a first cousin of James,(Number 64 of the Necrology) and William (Number 67 of the Necrology of Owl Rock Cemetery). Many projections have been made as to who is buried beneath the stones, but none of accuracy. Mr. Homer Waits related to Rev. James Varner, and he included in his compilation, what seems to be the most accurate concerning the stonepile grave nearest the church yard. - - That it contained the body of a man who was working, or had worked in one of the old tanning yards of the Sandtown Village. - - This may give reason for some who say "Christian Indians" are possibly buried here. - - They could be the first graves in the cemetery. - - Information of authority on the Stone Pile Graves would be most appreciated. Having given account for 251 graves in the cemetery, it would be reasonable to assume that near 300 persons are buried at Owl Rock, considering the many unmarked graves for which no records seem available. In this First Edition of a Necrology, which has turned out be an effort toward a genealogy, we invite your interest and contributions to a second and more completed edition. We express our sincere thanks in gratitude to all who have made this edition possible. First, to Rev. James Varner, for his untiring efforts in a labor of love in compiling the first necrology. - - To Eva McWilliams Smith, George Waits, and Jim Parker Campbell, for their valuable information toward family lineage, and records. - - To Rev. Henry Norris, for the blessings of his capable leadership as pastor of Owl Rock in this our Sesquicentennial Year. For me! Love made me do it: For my God, His Church and my People. Sincerely, May 21, 1976 Henley Campbell, (Editor and Printer)
