Joshua Patrick (Butts County, GA)

Joshua Patrick
Submitted by Louis Patrick

Putting the story together from several censuses, Joshua Patrick, my great-great grandfather, was born in November of 1819, in Tennessee. Both his mother and father, however, were born in Georgia. Joshua may have married Rebecca Williams in 1837 in Jasper Co. If so, the marriage was short-lived. My great-great grandmother´s first name, we know from many census records, was Lucinda, perhaps Lucinda Allen who married Joshua Patrick in Morgan Co., Georgia in 1838. (Genealogical work done earlier by other family members shows Lucinda Austin to have been his wife, I believe this is incorrect.)

Joshua shows up in the 1840 Butts Co. census (which does not list family members). By the 1850 census, Joshua and Lucinda have a substantial family: N. M. (William), 11; Thomas, 7; Edgar T. (my great grandfather) and Elizabeth, twins, age 4; and Susan, 2. In the 1860 census the family was living in Jasper Co., and Lucinda, 8; Joseph, 6; Henry C, 5; and Charles, 3, had been added to the family.

The 1850 and 1860 censuses list Joshua´s occupation as “Cabinet’ and “Sawyer.’ During 1840, 1841, 1842 and 1843, the Butts Co. Deed Book B records several payments to Joshua from the estates of various individuals. Family histories say that Joshua was an “undertaker,’ but I believe the evidence indicates that, along with other woodwork, he probably made coffins. My father says that my grandmother, who knew Joshua, said that he was a skilled woodworker. He sold his share in a “steam shop’ in Jackson in 1858; my guess is that this was a saw mill.

William N. and Thomas S. joined Company I of the 14th Regiment Georgia Infantry on July 12, 1861, in Atlanta. William died April 6, 1862 at Fredericksburg. This was during the time of the defense of the approach to Richmond through Yorktown and Fredericksburg. However, no additional information appears to be available regarding the cause of William´s death nor about his burial place. Both Thomas and Edgar were wounded at Spotsylvania May 12, 1864. Thomas was wounded in the hip, captured and imprisoned in Washington, D.C. He escaped and reported for muster sometime in November/December, 1864.

Edgar, who, being younger, entered service later than his older brothers, enlisted March 5, 1864 at Macon, in the same regiment and company as his brothers. He was wounded in the face by a mini-ball at Spotsylvania. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

Joshua served in the Lane´s Company, Georgia Infantry (Jasper and Butts Co. Guards).

In February, 1864, Elizabeth Patrick, possibly Edgar´s twin sister, married Joseph T. Jepson in Marion Co., Georgia. At any rate, Elizabeth is no longer enumerated with the family.

In 1866, Susan married William (W. A.) White in Butts Co., Georgia

In November, 1869, Joshua sold “the Patrick place’ in Butts Co. He moved the family to Arkabutla, Mississippi (in what was then DeSoto Co., but later became Tate Co.) where they were enumerated in the 1870 census. The family has a new son, Price, 8. W. A. White, Susan and Jennie, 3, and Anna,1, live next door.

William White later moved back to Butts Co. with his daughter Jennie, after Susan died or the couple divorced; I´ve found no further record of Susan. William later married Madora Cook in Butts in 1883.

Descendents of Joshua´s fourth son, Joseph, continue to live in Tate Co.

Edgar and his family moved to Phillips Co., AR in the early 20th century. Several of the family moved to Union Co. during the oil boom there in the 20s. Several descendants currently live in Arkansas, though most have scattered to points west.

Descendents of Edgar´s son, Louis Edgar, live in and around Memphis, TN.
