NICHOLS Cemetery

Part of the GaGenWeb & USGenWeb Project

Located in a field east of Banks Dairy Road (unpaved as of mid-January 2000) about a quarter mile south of the paved road (the “Metter Highway”) between Upper Lotts Creek Church and Portal in Bulloch County, Georgia.

This list of those buried in the Nichols family cemetery is based on a survey done on September 22, 1968, by Lawrence M. Edwards, and witnessed by Walter C. Coward, Jr., Notary Public, Chatham County, GA.  Here the names have been placed in alphabetical order.  Comments giving full names, where known, and indicating relationships among many of those listed have been added.  Corrections and additions to the commentary would be most welcome.

Memorial marker, placed between the graves of his parents; he was buried on or near the battlefield.  He was the oldest child of Theophilus and Rebecca Crumpton Nichols.  There is an inscription that begins, “In the twinkling of an eye this precious youth was called to die.” I was unable to read the remainder when I visited the site in January 2000.

Fannie D. Jones, third of four wives of Daniel Newton Nichols.  She died in childbirth, and the child also died. Her parents were Thomas Jones and Mary J. ?  Her obelisk marker is identical to that of Ann Jane Brannen Nichols, and the inscription also reads, “At the crystal river’s brink we shall find each broken link some sweet day by and by.”

Little Annie Nichols

born June 5, 1886

died August 11, 1886

First child of Daniel Newton Nichols and his second wife, Sarah Ellen “Sallie” Groover Nichols.  I wonder if her full name was Ann Jane, since it was a frequent custom in those days to name the first daughter of a second (or later) wife after the previous wife.

Theopelus Nichols

born January 16, 1808

died February 11,  1881

Theophilus, not Theopelus! The tombstone very clearly says Theophilus.  He was the husband of Rebecca Crumpton Nichols.  The inscription on his stone reads, “His words were kindness, his deeds were love. His spirit humble, he rests above.” He came to Georgia from North Carolina about 1820, and after settling in Bulloch County became a large landowner and a respected citizen who was opposed to slavery.
