Burrell died June 21, 1877, and was buried at New Hope primitive Baptist Church Cemetery on the Buffalo creek at Hickox, Ga. This is the church which his father who had become an ordained minister helped constitute in 1845.

He is listed in the 1820 Census of Appling County, but may have been living in present Charlton County then, because there was some confusion as to the county lines. He became a preacher in old Sardis Primitive Baptist Church which was constituted in 1817, five miles north of old Traders Hill, formerly Fort Alert, a post lookout for Indians in frontier days. Jesse Mizell died in 1827. His Last Will and Testament was proved by James Scott, MIC. Mrs. Mary Mizell, widow, qualified as Executrix Jan. 2, 1837, Camden Co., Ga.
