The first county seat was in Hillsborough, 6 miles east of the future site of Eatonton, Ga. (Putnam Co., created 1807). In 1806 the first election of local officials was held there at  the house of George Hill.

Clay vessels plowed up from an indian burial mound 9 miles south of Milledgeville are in the Smithsonian Institution.

Carl Vinson, a Baldwin County native, the first person to serve for more than 50 years in the United States House of Representatives. The USS Carl Vinson is named after him.

Susan Myrick, a Milledgeville native, was a dialect coach with the movie "Gone With The Wind".

Milledgeville is mentioned in these movies: "The Member of The Wedding" and "Pretty Lady"

Some scenes in the movie  "The Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All" were shot in the old governor's mansion.
