FURRH SURNAME

The 1850 Lowndes County, Alabama, census lists three Furrs (George age 56, David age 45, and John age 30) all of whom were born in South Carolina and later moved to Texas where the spelling of their name was changed to Furrh.  These Furr(h)s are believed to have been born in Edgefield County (District), South Carolina.  Numerous researchers have and are continuing to try to determine the lineage of these Furr(h)s.  One theory is that they are related to the Virginia Furrs.  Another is that they are related to the North Carolina Furrs.  To my knowledge, no one has found any definitive information that would prove which of these theories is correct or if these individuals are related to a totally different line.  The link below includes everything I have collected on these Furr(h)s.  Additions or corrections are welcomed.

Furrh Database

According to the Handbook of Texas Online:  FURRH, TEXAS.  Furrh is on Farm Road 31 fourteen miles northeast of Carthage in northeastern Panola County.  It was named for John Furrh, who established a grist and saw mill near DeBerry in 1871, and Furrh's son T. H. Furrh, who by 1885 had a mill and general store at the site of the settlement.  A post office was established at Furrh in 1898, and by 1914 the community also had two general stores, a cotton gin, a gristmill, and an estimated population of 150.  Its post office closed in 1917, and mail for Furrh residents was sent to DeBerry. By the mid-1930s only a store and a number of scattered houses remained at Furrh, which reported a population of sixty-two in 1936.  After World War II the store closed.  In the early 1990s Furrh was a dispersed rural community with an estimated population of forty.

The 1880 United States Census lists 51 Furrhs, all in Texas and all born in either South Carolina (3), Alabama (11), or Texas (37).   These Furrhs are listed below.
