SAINT JOHN’S CHURCH (Daughter Church to Holy Trinity

Built in 1769, to take the overflow from the congregation of the Parish Church. During 1875 it became a parish in its own right. The church was demolished in 1972, after a fire left the structure unstable.

Sunderland Orphan Asylum, founded in 1853 and opened on 17th October, 1861 – closed in 1939.

Assembly Garth and Hall, built 1750.

 

The third Freeman’s Hospital 1876, rebuilt in James Williams Street. The first hospital, 1719, faced the Parish Church on the site of the later Assembly Garth and the second stood at the end of Church Walk East

Phoenix Lodge, built in 1785 and extended in 1880, is the oldest Masonic Temple in the world still functioning in its orginal building.
