Note:- This book is available to view on ancestry.com - Go to the card index; input Dorset to bring up all the Dorset records; select the 'Dorset, England, Poor Law and Parish Records, 1511-1997' file; then select the Parish or Poor Law Union for 'Dorchester, Holy Trinity' and under Record type 'Vestry Minutes'; I have included image numbers to aid locating entries as it has not (at Jan 2015) been indexed..

These accounts can often add valuable background to events of the day. For example the fathers of bastards are sometimes named; marriage licences bought to help prevent single women seeking support; the recently deceased referred to as widows often then fell onto the parish for support. They also identify who were churchwardens and overseers and even some of the more important parishioners.

An important document that can be read alongside these minutes is the Militia Return for 1758 as this gives the trade of most of the individuals running the poor law e.g. churchwardens, overseers and senior parishioners

James according to his will had 3 children, one also named Gregory Syndercombe Gentleman of Dorchester was buried at Hilton on 14th Nov 1757 who may have been the subject of this order. If this is the case there must be a prior bastardy bond somewhere and the reason for this entry may have been because the overseers knew he was dying and wished to lodge a formal claim against his estate]

That--- Silas TOP be apprehended as soon as possible [Note:- The most likely reason for this order is that he is the father of a bastard child as criminal activity would have been dealt with by the constable. Here the church officials would have had to pay under the Poor Law for the woman's lying in and future support of the child and were empowered to order the arrest of prospective fathers named by the mother who would have been examined by the churchwardens and overseers. I notice from the baptism register that on the same day i.e. 18th October 1761, James the baseborn son of Mary BRINE was baptised at Holy Trinity. So this order was made at the vestry held after that baptism. Unfortunately as was so often the case the child died and was buried at Holy Trinity Dorchester on 17 Jan 1762 so the Overseers would have demanded payment initially for the costs incurred but he would also have been charged later for the funeral expenses incurred by the parish].

and that a Century Box be made for the Revd Mr HUBBOCK
[Note:- The New and Complete Dictionary of the English Language published in 1775 by John Ash confirms our current understanding of Century as being "100" and Centrybox as "The box or place in which a soldier keeps sentry". Neither seems appropriate here. The Rev John HUBBOCK was rector of Holy Trinity and St Peters from 1752 until his death in 1781. By 1775 he was 63 years old and had been Rector for 23 years. The only thing that I can think of is that he may have started to feel his age. He died in Bath where a number of Dorchester Parishioners were sent to receive medical treatment with his body being returned to Dorchester for burial at St Peters. This may have been a boxed pew specifically made for his use. These had a tall back and sides to keep out the draft, shaped a bit like a sentry box but with a seat in it.
