Notes:-
Bishops Transcripts have not survived for this period but a copy of the original registers are held at the Dorset History Centre and have now been fully transcribed . These were clearly compiled after the event as they are not in strict date order but for ease of identification they have been returned to date order in the transcription given below. Over 60 Wills are listed in the Will's Index. for this period and I have cross referenced or added notes where I have managed to locate burial outside of Fordington.

John JACOB was vicar of Fordington which makes it strange that the compiler of the record, probably the churchwarden, did not know Elizabeth's surname? John and Grace did have a daughter Elizabeth baptised in St Georges church on 25th Feb 1718/19 so on the face of it this is her death. There is however a Will for an Elizabeth JACOB -- See Wills Index 1719/20; Administration of Elizabeth JACOB of Fordington Spinster -- and this would not have been completed for a small child leading me to believe that this may have been a close relative of the vicar? It would be necessary to order the Will to resolve relationships]

    [NOTE:- The NBI has recorded her name as Catherine Channing buried 15th Feb 1726; Ancestry.com has indexed as Althia CHANNING buried 15th Sep 1726. Her Christian name is not clear and could be Althia although this is not a name I have heard in Dorchester/Fordington at this date. It could be Catthia a form of Catherine. The correct date of burial is 15th January 1726/7. The changes in month are not obvious, November has been abbreviated to Nov ; December only as a capital 'D' ; January as a poorly written Jan; and immediately followed by 'Dito' i.e. Ditto which unusually seems to have been used to carry down the month instead of the usual blank space until the next month.]
    [NOTE:- Overseers Accounts for Fordington show that from at least 30 April 1726 William CHANNING was being given poor relief at 3 shillings a week. In the January 1726/27 Accounts, which were presumably completed a bit after the event, there is a note that "William CHANNING has 1s 6d allowed him and no more his wife being dead". In the event his allowance is reduced from 3 shillings to 2 shillings [not 1s 6d] a week wef 20th January 1726/27. The Accounts also show on 3rd April 1727 under 'disbursements since Easter' that the Overseers 'paid for a coffin for 'William Channing's wife' which cost them 1 shilling. William continues to receive 2s a week until 8th December 1727 when all payments promptly cease. This is because his burial took place on 10th Dec 1727 and is recorded below. The Overseer of the Poor in Fordington John GREENING paid 'ye 11th December 1727 James FRAMPTON for making the coffin for William CHANNING and for some reason his cost 7 shillings. They also paid Ambrose HOUNT [HUNT?] for ringing the church bells but did not enter an amount, and 1 shilling to William FFREAK for digging his grave. Two local women laid out his corpse and were paid 2 shillings a penny was paid for mead and another shilling for a board for the bearers to carry the coffin on. Finally the shroud cost 2 shillings and 4 pence quite a lot of money as this would have included a fee for an affidavit to confirm as required by law that he had been buried in woollen.

    NOTE:-
    He was first brought to the attention of the Overseer of the Poor (then William BISHOP) in April 1727 when he appears in the extraordinary accounts for that month. He is awarded a weekly payment of 6 pence and they buy him a pair of shoes (3s); three shirts (6s); and a pair of breeches (2s 9d). He remains on this weekly rate until 9th June 1727 when it is increased to 1 shilling a week. Such a low payment suggests that he was single or widowed with no dependants. On 9th August 1727 they also buy him a pair of stockings but on 6th September they pay two pence for 'milk and bisket (biscuit) in his sickness' and another penny for 'a bundle of straw' presumably to increase his comfort to lay on. He must have recovered at least to some extent as payments continue until 22nd December 1727 when they cease altogether.

    Accounts drawn up on 21st December show that the Overseer (by then John GREENING) paid :- William HANDY (HARDY?) for making 'William PEATY's Coffen' (7s); his shroud (with affidavit) (2s 11d); a black cloth (for the coffin) (1s); laying him out (2s); Ambrose HUNT for ringing the church bells (6d); William FFREAK for digging his grave and 1 penny for beer, and a shilling for a board for the bearers to carry the coffin on.     The National Burial Index (NBI) only records a Christian name but from the Parish Registers and Overseers Accounts for that year it is clear that this is the burial of William PATEY (also spelt PEATY, PEATEY or PETY
