The Chasefield Plantation Cemetery was originally located
on Chasefield Plantation near Fort Barrancas, which was the home of William H. Chase, a Captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The first burial was in 1842.
Due to highway construction in 1957, the cemetery was moved to the Gulf Islands National Seashore at Pensacola Beach. Only above-ground stones were moved, not the remains.
Directions: From Pensacola Beach, drive west on SR 399, following the signs to Ft. Pickens. Drive six miles beyond the entrance to Ft. Pickens and the cemetery is on the right side of
the road. It lies within a chain link fence enclosure next to a road pull
off. Across the road from the cemetery is the road to Battery Wagner. The entrance to Fort
Pickens is visible from the cemetery.
Note: The stones of Sarah CHASE, B. F. KERSEY, and James McDOWELL are now missing.
