St. Lucie County  Historical Museum Guide

Memorial Garden

As you enter the Museum grounds you will find a water trough which was originally located at the Edwin Binney home.  Mr. Binney, one of the inventors of Crayola Crayons, visited Fort Pierce for the first time in 1911.  He built a home, which he called "Florindia".  He planted trees which now provide the canopy over Indrio Road.  Although he was what we here call a "snowbird," he was very active in public affairs.  He made generous gifts of property for public use and was instrumental in saving the St. Lucie County Bank from collapse during the Great Depression.  The area around their home, Indrio, was named by Mrs. Alice Binney who combined the first three letters of the word "Indian" with the Spanish word for river, "rio."

You next pass the Gardner House, donated to the Museum by the Maurice "Buddy" Gardner family.  Maurice is pictured among the Sophomore class of Fort Pierce High School (1928) below.  Tours of the Gardner House are guided.

Among the native flora you will see cannons and anchors recovered from the Plata "Treasure" fleet shipwreck.
