Withlacoochee Missionary Baptist Cemetery

In 1880 a pioneer settlement called Ashley was beginning to grow. Thomas Franklin Campbell and Elam "Eli" Larkin, built the Baptist Church. October 13, 1884 saw the coming of an official Postal Office; May 1886 saw the closing of the community's the post office. Partially due to the "great freeze" in the winter of 1894-1895 the community began its decline, the little settlement had practically disappeared by 1910.

The original church was eventually destroyed. The existing church has quite a fascinating history, beginning its existence as the general store in the town of Richland a few miles to the south. At some point the owners were murdered in the store, the church bought the building and moved it to its present location. The present site is within 100 feet of the original church building and it became the New Withlacoochee Missionary Baptist Church. The well-kept cemetery dates from around 1890.

Directions: Just North of Dade City on US 301, take River Road toward the Withlacoochee River State Park. The road will split with Sparkman Road to the right and River road continues to the left. Proceed left and cross the Withlacoochee River and follow the road to the cemetery. The cemetery is on the right.
