The Martin County Genealogical Society (MCGS) Archives Committee, a team of dedicated volunteers, worked for several years to extract and prepare the alphabetical indexes shown on the left-hand side of this table. The indexes contain a list of deceased individuals and the newspaper date and page number on which the obit appeared. Volunteers carefully reviewed microfilm images of the The Stuart News starting in 1913 and noted the printed obituaries, death accounts, and/or card of thanks. For more information and/or a more informative account of each obituary, please contact Karen Peterson ([email protected]) or send an Email to [email protected].

If you find an ancestor in one of the above indexes and would like a copy of the printed obituary, etc., volunteers from MCGS will obtain the published obit from the appropriate microfilm roll and mail a copy to you and/or scan it for a E-mail to you.  Be sure to provide the ancestor's name, type of announcement, and date of publication.  Also include an email address and/or telephone number in case questions arise.

"Clipped" obits indexes are a work in progress.  Send us an email and ask if an obit may be in any of the volumes not yet indexed.  The Social Security Death Index (SSDI), which is available on www.familysearch.org is easily accessible for you to do a double check on the death date of a person of interest.  Mail-in form for requesting more information.

For obits from current date back three years, you can search the local newspaper website http://www.tcpalm.com; then click on OBITS.  For older obits back to Feb. 2001, go to http://www.legacy.com.  Read their FAQs for instructions on how you can access their archive files for a small fee via your credit card.

MCGS is also making available printed and bound copies of these three indexes (no obits, just an index of obits).  Costs quoted include printing, handling, and mailing:

  • Vol. 1:  $18.00
  • Vol. 2:  $20.00
  • Vol. 3:  $25.00
