Submitted by: Darrel Bell

FIRST GENERATION

1.  Hezekiah BELL was born about 1758 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  He died about Oct 1803 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  He served in the military c 1781 Revoluntionary War in North Carolina.  Except for knowing about when he was born, when he married Martha Baggett and the month and year of his death.  The question is who was Hezekiah Bell, he was the youngest son of George Bell and his wife Debra.  He received substaintial property from Martha's father, Abraham Baggett.  Other than that bit of knowledge, there's nothing else known of him.

From information received, Hezekiah Bell was a Revoluntionary War Veteran.  The Genealogical Society of Sampson/Duplin Counties of North Carolina are compiling a book on Revoluntionary War Veterans. Hezekiah war informations was received from Jerome Tews of North Carolina.

He was married to Martha Baggett on Dec 10 1778 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  Martha Baggett was born about 1760 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  She died in Georgia.  Martha could have traveled south with her children and took up residence with Elizabeth, whom I've determined to be the youngest child, and her husband Duncan Morgan.  Martha married Hezekiah Bell, December 10, 1778.  She was the mother of their five children.  Not much is known of her either, except it is believed she lived until the mid 1840's.  Hezekiah BELL and Martha Baggett had the following children:

2 i. Abraham BELL was born in 1780 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  There is a Abraham Bell listed on the 1840 Federal Census for Madison County, Florida.  Along with a John Bell, who both state that they come from North Carolina.  The ages for both coincide with the estimated ages and birth year for Hezekiahs sons Abraham and John.
+3 ii. Perthena (Theney or Thena) Bell.
4 iii. John BELL was born about 1790 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  There is a John Bell listed on the 1840 Federal Census for Madison County, Florida.  Along with a Abraham Bell, who both state that they come from North Carolina.  The ages for both coincide with the estimated ages and birth year for Hezekiahs sons Abraham and John.
 +5 iv. DUNCAN BELL.
 +6 v. Elizabeth BELL.
SECOND GENERATION

3.  Perthena (Theney or Thena) Bell was born about 1785 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  She was baptized on Sep 12 1835 in Bethlehem PBC, Quitman, Ga.  She died about 1847 in LOWNDES CO., GA.  She was buried about 1847 in LOWNDES CO., GA.  Perthena was apparently the oldest of Hezekiah Bell and Martha Baggett's two daughters. Her three children George, Martha and John were born in North Carolina.  After the death of her husband, Joseph Williams, Jr. in 1824,  She married Reuben Morgan and along with her sister Elizabeth, her husband Duncan Morgan and brother Duncan Bell, left Noth Carolina.  This family group was found to be in Decatur County, Georgia in 1830.

In 1840 the same group was found on the Federal Census for Lowndes County, Georgia.  According to the Williams Family, Perthena died in 1847 in Lowndes County, the area that they resided in is possibly part of what's now Brooks County, Georgia.

New information for Perthena, received from Linda Hughes, great-ggrand-daughter.  Perthena Bell Williams Morgan united with Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church, September 12, 1835.  further information from this source indicates that she possibly died about 1839.  Bethlehem was located in the Old Lowndes County, present day Brooks County.  Information also indicates that her husband, Reuben joined on September 13, 1835.  Baptism  was on the respective dates.

She was married to Joseph Williams, Jr (son of Joseph Williams, Sr) on Jun 20 1810 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  Joseph Williams, Jr died about 1824 in DUPLIN CO., NC.  He was born in DUPLIN CO., NC.  Perthena (Theney or Thena) Bell and Joseph Williams, Jr had the following children:

 +7 i. Glisson Williams.
 +8 ii. Martha Ann Williams.
 +9 iii. John Williams.

She was married to Reuben Morgan on Feb 15 1825 in DUPLIN CO., NC.

5.  DUNCAN BELL was born in 1795 in SAMPSON CO.  NORTH CARLOINA.  DUNCAN BELL WAS BORN CIRCA 1787 IN SAMPSON COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA.  He died about 1861 in LAFAYETTE CO., FL.  He served in the military 1838 3rd Seminole War in MADISON COUNTY, FLORIDA.  served with the East Florida Mounted Volunteers.  Duncan Bell, born ca. 1795 Sampson County, North Carolina.  Duncan was theyoungest of three brothers and two sisters, of Hezekiah Bell and Martha Baggett. There's not much recorded on him before 1829. However, he is found as a witness on several documents, wiils, etc. He probaly married in his late twenty's or early thirty's.  His oldest documented child,  George, was born in 1828.  However, there is no documents naming the mother of his seven children.  However, he did remarry late in life.  On August 8, 1855 he married Nancy T. Shortridge, there were no issue of this marriage.

In 1829, he along with his two sisters and their husbands are found selling theirholdings in North Carolina.  He is found on the 1830 Census for Decatur County, Georiga. Duncan Bell served with Captain Livingston's Co. 2 Reg't East Florida Vols.  He joined June 16, 1837 and according to the muster of October 8, 1837, he was still present. It was also noted that he rode a Bay horse.  In 1840, Duncan was found on the Census of 1840 for Lowndes County,  Georiga.  In 1850, Duncan was on the 1850 Census for Madison County, Florida. H was listed with six children, with the oldest, George living with his  nephew Glission Williams.

Duncan was commissioned Justice of the Peace, July 5, 1852, by Governor Thomas Brown, for the 11th district of Madison County, Florida.  During the same year he also appointed the Clerks of Election for Bell's District of Madison County, Florida.  This was found on Election Return dated October 4, 1852.

With Duncan's early life still a mystery, he did leave a sound legacy for his children and other descendants to build upon.  Each of his children built a strong relationship with their community.  They were the Pioneers that helped build this Nation and State to what it is today.

Aside from his home life my Great-Grandfather took a seat in the public life, as County Treasurer, for Lafayette County, Florida.  He untook this calling from residents of Lafayette County for a number of years.

He professed his worship with god with the Primitive Baptist Faith and was a member of Mt. Nebo Primitive Baptist Church.  I recall reading a book by Mr. Lawerence Stanley, in one of his he indicated that there were no more  Primitive Baptist, that they had all died out.  As you will see they did not die out, that the church has a Prominate place in my Family History.
