Joseph Carpenter born 1764 and died 24 May 1852 married Catherine Blanken Baker born 28 Sep 1759 and died 19 May 1832. Lived in Culpepper , VA. Their son, my great-great parent William Carpenter born 27 April 1794 and died 15 Mar 1857 came to Grand Ridge, Jackson Co. FL. Circa 1828 and settled about one mile northwest of Grand Ridge. My granddad said he was here in 1818 with General Jackson. I have no proof to back this up. William first showed up on the 1830 census and got a Land Patent in 1834.

William (Bill), James (Jim), Henry and John Joseph Carpenter were sons of William Carpenter Sr., who cam to Grand Ridge, Jackson County, Florida from Culpepper, VA. He first appeared on Jackson County, Florida Census in 1830. William Carpenter Sr., was of German descent. He was a farmer and had a trade of Carriage Maker.

In 1836 William Carpenter Sr. served in the 2nd Seminole Indian War under the command of Captain Long, 7th FL Mil. Also know as the 7th Regt. FL mil. William Carpenter Sr. was stationed near Fort Heilmon. In 1835 he married Isabella Baker who lived in the Dellwood, FL area.

Isabella Baker Carpenter was of Scottish descent. She came to Florida from Cumberland County, NC with her parents in 1825, being 14 years old. Her parents were John and Christian Baker, who are buried at Cow Pen Pond Cemetery, Jackson County, Florida.

William Carpenter Sr. was a landholder and voted in the first state wide election in Jackson County, Florida. He voted at Brown's Ferry (Hugh Rusk's Store) on 26 May 1845.

William and Isabella's son's were farmers during their life time except what time they served in the Civil War.

William and Isabella Carpenter's nine children were:

1. Francis Carpenter b. 7-25-1836 d. 3-13-1907, she married 20 Jan 1857 to Zecklidge Johnson b. 5-24-1831 d. 3-24-1902, He was a Private 6th FL INF. CSA.

William Carpenter Jr. and Henry Carpenter first served in 1861 in Jackson Black Hawk Cavalry. They enlisted 19 Oct 1861. This company was commanded by Captain A. B. Hamilton. This company formed a part of the 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, Florida Volunteer Militia which was commanded by Lt. Col. Thomas C James and called into the service of the state by Gov. Milton on 19 Oct 1861, for a term of six months unless sooner discharged.

The mustering officer, C.M. Harris, certified to the correctness of the roll, the condition of their horses, equipment and their acceptance into the service of the state for the term specified.

William Carpenter Jr. enlisted in the CSA at River Junction, FL (Apalachicola Arsenal) on 11 Feb 1862 in the company of Capt Lawrence Hathaway. During the war he was in Roll Company F (Magnolia State Guards) 6th Florida Infantry.

Sometimes in 1864 he was furloughed at Knoxville, TN. Because of chronic diaherra which he suffered from the rest of his life and corruption on his left side from handling heavy loads of cartridge boxes.

William Carpenter Jr. stayed home on furlough and was finally discharged at Quincy, FL on 22 May 1865.

3. Henry Carpenter b. 11-12-1840 d. 8-30-1912, PVT 2nd FL CAV CSA. Never married, but had a child which his sister raised.

Henry Carpenter enlisted on 22 Aug 1863 at Camp Milton (Blue Springs, FL) in Capt. W.H. Milton's Calvary, Company G 2nd FL Calvary.

Henry Carpenter was actively engaged in the Battle of Natural Bridge, Battle of Ocean Pond, Cedar Creek Ford and at Gainesville. He was in Captain Henry Simmon's Company.

The 2nd Florida Calvary was formed from independent companies in late 1862. Caraway Smith, who commanded an independent company known as the Aucilla Troop, was elected colonel of the new regiment. The unit served in North and Central Florida for the remainder of the war, but was seldom united together into a unified command. The second was involved in numerous small skirmishes during the period 1863-1865, and elements of the regiment were present at Olustee, Gainesville, the capture of Columbine Station 4 and natural Bridge. Colonel Smith was severely criticized after Olustee for failing to aggressively persue the retreating federal forces and thus allowing them to escape back to Jacksonville.

Henry Carpenter was honorably discharged at Baldwin, FL on 17 May 1865.

Henry Lost two fingers on left hand in 1855 in an accident. In 1880 he was said to have bilious fever (liver ailment). In 1864 he was thrown from a horse and suffered from dislocation of the left shoulder joint (broke his left clavicle bone). Before he died in 1912 he was disabled by rheumatism.

In 1863 Camp Douglas death rate was 30%. At Camp Douglas they lived in buildings 90 ft long and 24 ft wide and 20 ft was used as a kitchen and the prisoners picked a man to be the cook. Polluted water caused James to have stomach problems for the rest of his life.
