I don't know how I missed this when I read your post earlier. Mary Ann Futch,the wife of Israel Baxter and Lucinda Futch, the

wife of Thomas Jefferson Anderson were not sisters. Their daddy's were brothers, Mary Ann's was Onesimus Futch JR and his

wife Judith "Works" Futch and Lucinda's was Isaac Futch and his wife Unity " ? " Futch.

Lucinda was my Paternal great great grandmother. Her daughter "Emily Caroline Anderson" was my great grandmother. She

married Seborn Robinson. Their daughter Vergie Seleta "Seledith" Robinson married Joseph Aaron Conrad. They were my

Grandparents.

Mary Ann and Israel Baxter were my maternal Great great grand father "Thomas Baxter's Parents. Thomas married Elizabeth

Register and they had one child. Nancy Elizabeth Baxter who married Franklin Elmore King. My grandmother was Idella "Ida"

King and she married Thomas Wesley Hatcher who was born in Hartford, Al. His parents were John and "Martha Ann

Elizabeth Culverhouse" Hatcher. John is the son Of John Hatcher and Mary "Brady" Hatcher, from Georgia.

Some of this information may help others in their research.

Lucinda had two other sisters who moved to Jackson County about the same time. Emma Lee "Emily" Futch " Dekle"

McDaniel and her husband John McDaniel and Welthy Ann "Futch" McNealy, the wife of Adam McNealy.

Adam's daddy was William McNealy the half brother of Israel Baxter. I might also meantion here that Caroline "Anderson" and

her husband Seborn Robinson had two daughters who married back into the TIDWELL families.

Another daughter of Thomas Jeff and Lucinda was Lenora who married first Valentine Lockhart and later married Wiley

Robinson The brother of Seborn.

Just a note - In my research in Jackson Co, FL I have found that part of the 1870 CENSUS seems to be MISSING. Many of my ancestors who lived in the 11th precinct do not appear, yet I know from other records that they were still in the community. Perhaps others missing also. Your James E. BAXTER, son of James O. BAXTER and Sarah Ann FUTCH, married Mary S. TIDWELL 27 Jul 1854 and Caroline TIDWELL 21 Mar 1871 both in Jackson Co., FL. This would indicate to me that they didn't go anywhere. I am not sure what happened to that part of the census but it may have never been taken. In 1869 there was what was called "The Second Rebellion" in Jackson Co which might have prevented a Yankee census taker from "walking the streets" of that section - They had there own justice system. Also somewhere close to that time - don't remember exactly - they had a fever outbreak in that northern part of the county which may have prevented the census being taken. Of course - it could be lost or microfilmed with another county or any number of things but the point is that they probably didn't go anywhere. Are they still there in 1880?

The parents of James E. BAXTER - James O. BAXTER & Sarah FUTCH were married 9 Dec 1823 in Chatham Co., GA. Their marriage license states they were "of Bullock Co.", GA. They moved to Jackson Co., FL by 18 Jun 1827 when he received land in Sect 21 Twp 6N Range 10W.

Henry County, Alabama Orphans Record Book "C" page 106, dated 10 Sep 1838. Letters of guardianship were issued to Julius Evans to take charge of "Vicey A. Evans, Ellinor J Evans and Richard D. Evans, minor heirs of Edward Evans, Deceased.

Orphans Record Book "D" page 94. In June 1843, Israel A. Baxter stated that he had received from Julius Evans one hundred sixty five dollars and 73/100. The story is related by Sally Kinsey the sister of Frances Richardson (1st wife of John Green Baxter). J. Eli Baxter married Mary Tidwell and moved to Suwannee County. They had several children, when J. Eli Baxter went back to Jackson county to visit Mary's family and told them Mary had died and left him with some motherless children. So he married Caroline and brought her back and mover her in the house with Mary and they both had children for him. Further rumor is that Mary killed Caroline when she was in bed after having a baby in 1875. That is all the information she seemed to know. Didn't know anything about the outcome. Caroline's death may have been recorded as died in childbirth. 06-2000

Surname:

I am searching for relatives of Julius Baxter and Cristina or Christianna (Raynes) Baxter, my Great Grandparents, both born in

FL in 1860. The 1900 census shows them living in Jackson County FL and that they were farmers. Julius's parents were

William M. and Elizabeth Baxter who were in Jackson County as early as 1819.

Julius and Christianna had 7 children that I am aware of Charlie L., Lewis, Cary, Junia, Walter, Satchie, and George W. All but

two were born in FL between 1884 and 1898. Satchie Ann Baxter was my Grandma born in FL in 1896, she married Houston

Calloway who was born in 1884 in Henry County AL. Houston's parents were James D. and Aletha (Hamm) Calloway.

I know the Baxter and Calloway families lived in Malone and Marianna FL and maybe some of them still do. I don't know

much about the Raynes or Hamm families.

William M. and Elizabeth Baxter were the parents of Elizabeth, James Cary, William Henry, Hugh, and Julius. According to my

information they were all born in Jackson County FL between 1843 and 1860.

About the death of Buddy. No, he was not the one killed. He killed his brother, Walter Benjamin (Babe). It was over moonshine, I understand. Babe apparently shot Buddy in the foot. He went over to the barn where his other brother Darling was working on the roof and borrowed his knife. Darl didn't know what he was planning to do with it. He went and killed Babe. That was 30 June 1905. Babe, I understand was a real bad one and no one in the community wanted Buddy charged so I guess that was the end of it. That section of the country and into Southern Alabama was very rough, even the law wouldn't go in there. My take on the story is that Buddy had suffered a lot of abuse at the hand of his brother and had enough and no one could do anything to help him so he in took it into his own hands. He was almost a man not yet 21 years old and under the influence of the moonshine.

About Buddy's death. He had the measles I understand and was almost recovered and went out in the rain and got pneumonia and died. Allen Price remembers it. Maybe you can take you Mom over to visit him. He is the son of Lizzy Coonrod and Frank Price. He would be a 1st cousin to you mom.

About the end of the depression, Edward Braswell finally got a job working in the groves. It was with Milious Conrad in Apopka. Ela Conrad, James Edward Braswell and Lubie Conrad moved into a little three room house outside Apopka (which was on the property just to the Apopka side and adjoining what is now Errol Estates). Milious (being the caretaker of the grove) and his family lived in a big two story house on the other side of the barn. Milious also had his sister Lillie (deaf and dumb) living with his family. Being very poor, the Conrads did not have a clock in their house and Ela would guess as to what time to get up and make breakfast for Edward who would listen for noise to come from the barn as the signal to report to work. One very bright moonlit morning, Ela got up and made breakfast and Edward ate and waited and waited for the signal to report to work. Several hours later, noise from the barn signaled work time. Ela must have started her breakfast about 1 or 2 in the morning and later Talbert Norwood (who lived with his wife and family, in another little house on the other side of the barn) found out and promised to walk down every Morning and tap on the side of the house to let Ela know it was time to start breakfast. Lubie could blow into the mouth of babies and cure them of the thrush. This was because she had never seen her father. She said this started when she was a very small girl, when strangers would bring their babies to have her perform this feat.

In the summer of 1934, Dr. John Marion Whitfield and his wife were visiting Ela and family, when Ela mentioned that Lubie was not eating and was under weight and wanted to know what to do. Dr. John said that Lubie should come to Panama City and live with his wife, Maggie and him. After relenting for awhile, Ela finally agreed and Lubie returned to the Whitfield residence on Jinks Avenue and attended the eleventh grade at Bay County High School. The Doctor would take Lubie to the hospital every week and weigh her. She never gained an once and returned home to her family the next summer with Arthur Kimbro (Aunt George's son), who was coming to Central Florida to visit relatives. By then, Ela had sold her forty acres in Malone for $500 and bought the house at 123 E. 7th Street in Apopka. Told by Lubie Apr 17, 1998.
