ADAM McNEALY, son of Col.Wm. McNealy

ADAM McNEALY
Son of Col. Wm. McNealy.
He was born in Bullock County, Georgia, July 20, 1817; died at Marianna June 15, 1899.

The family came from North Carolina and settled on what is known as the old Hays plantation, in 1823, at a time when there were more Indians than settlers in Jackson County. Colonel McNealy was one of the most prominent of the early pioneers and was active in the political affairs of the county.

Adam McNealy started to farm at the age of 22, on his own account, with little capital, and later became a very successful planter. He was elected county commissioner in 1859 and served 18 years.

He married three times, (1) Welthlyaun Futch who died in 1843; (2) Mary Knapp, who died in 1868, and (3) Mrs. Louvinia Byrd. He had two sons in the Confederate Army - Sidney F. McNealy, who ,died in service on July 9, 1862, and is buried at Tallahassee; and Isaac W. McNealy. A daughter, Elizabeth, by his second marriage, married Dr. C. C. Burke, assistant surgeon at the Confederate hospital at the time of the Battle of Marianna. The Burkes and Isaac McNealy were pioneers of Texarkana, Texas, near the Arkansas line. Betty Hentz McNealy, another daughter, married Richard Lewis, and they were the parents of Ella Lewis, who, married Dr. R. S. Pierce; Adam McNealy Lewis, deceased, former U. S. Marshal and Marianna business man; and Mrs. Arthur Braun, member of the faculty of the P. K. Yonge school at Pensacola.

Adam McNealy was one of the home guards who fought so courageously in the Battle of Marianna, and was wounded, but not seriously.

From "History of the Greenwood Baptist Church" by Rev. W. A. Burns, manuscript, March 16, 1945

It is also recorded that Deacon Thomas Barnes reported that Deacon Adam McNealy did not believe in the eternal punishment of the wicked.  After deliberations, "Bro. McNealy was unanimously excluded."
This was on January 6, 1855.
