Getting Your GEDCOM Onto the Web

Getting Your GEDCOM Onto the Web

Hints from the Genealogical Society of Okeechobee

First: Get a GEDCOM file.

GEDCOM (a Genealogical Data Communications) is a standard format for transferring genealogical data from computer to computer, or program to program. It's in ASCII (text) format.

Most genealogical programs can export and import files to and from GEDCOM. To create a GEDCOM file, look for the command "export" or "save as" or "copy to." FamilyTreeMaker uses "Copy/Export Files." The file will be saved with the extension: .GED.

For some systems (like MyFamily.com), you simply upload your GEDCOM file and they will create the webpage for you.

For most websites, however, you will have to create html files to upload.

Second: Convert Your GEDCOM file to html format:

Two programs can be downloaded from the web:

ged2html.exe
You can get it on the web at: http://www.gendex.com/ged2html. This is a shareware product and you are supposed to register it for $20.

GEDBrows.exe
This is available on the web at: www.misbach.org. It also should be registered.

Either program will work. Simply create your GEDCOM and run the program. Both will create (depending on the size of your GED file) hundreds of html files, all of which must be uploaded to your new website.

Third: Upload Your html Files to the Web

This can be done with the upload facilities provided by the webserver or by ftp (File Transfer Protocol.)

The easiest way to use ftp is with WS_FTP. This program is available free by e-mailing: [email protected]
