CLEARWATER HISTORICAL SOCIETY

February 5, 2007

Board meeting called to order by John Tsacrios. President Terri Ohr was ill and asked John to chair the meeting in her place.

Members present included: Dean Robinson, Joe Turner Jr., Joan Turner, Shirley Galatas, Bettie Mease, Buddy Gross, Mike Sanders, Marvin Moore, Chuck McPherson, Helen Wilcox, Anne Epling, Bill Wallace, Bob Delack, John Tsacrios, and Lorelei Keif. Guests present included Anne Fogarty from the city and Danny France. They were welcomed by John on behalf of the board.

Minutes of the January 9, 2007 meeting were corrected and approved.

Treasurer's report given. Balance as of 2-5-07 was $6968.83. Report was preliminary and written report to follow.

OLD BUSINESS

A. Membership Committee- Bettie Mease Buddy stated that we have several members with no current address on record. Membership renewals are being returned on these members. Board members provided help with this matter as they were able.

B. Program Committee- Jay Rhodes John reminded us that the next fish fry is the first Saturday in May. All plans are set.

C. Public Relations Committee- Dean Robinson Dean presented copies of recent articles featuring CHS. Dean presented ideas for a new slant on what could be released to the media to attract positive attention. He asked for feedback. May feature something on our Bomber exhibit or our new Plumb Family book.

D. Museum Committee- Dave Perkins and Mike Sanders John Tsacrios recently called the police about homeless people on the property. Two community police representatives came by the museum last Thursday. A window was recently broken but it didn't appear anyone entered the museum. Bill Wallace said Paint Your Heart out Pinellas came by and took measurements and notes. Bill will continue to keep tabs on this matter. Bill's A/C contact is no longer employed at that company.

E. Artifacts and Documents Committee- Joan Turner Joan reported that she found a 1975-76 street directory at Turner Printing. Bill Wallace followed up with the late Mr. Shaw's son regarding the donation of historical photos. Waiting on a call back. Margaret Hightower of Harbor Oaks is trying to get the historical marker for Harbor Oaks restored. Mike Sanders reported that the Seminole Street Bridge marker has been put back up. John shared an e mail received form the city regarding Clearwater Stories. The project is moving forward. The city is applying for a grant and asking for our support in the writing of it. Bill Wallace will attend a meeting with the city on February 12th and asked anyone else interested to join him.

F. Historical Research Committee- Pat Moore Bill Wallace asked about the history of calling Clearwater High School Central High School. Anyone with details please contact Bill. Terry Fortner is doing research on the high school. Bill is doing a slide show at Steak and Ale on February 12th for a local group. He will also be presenting a slide show at an upcoming Masonic dinner.

G. Fund Raising Committee- Helen Wilcox No report.

H. Homestead Committee- Anne Epling and Lorelei Keif Still need people to sign up for Saturday shifts. Attendance has been up lately.

Other- Chuck McPherson has graciously volunteered to run for the office of Vice-President which Laddie Irion has vacated. Chuck is running unopposed. Buddy made a motion to accept Chuck McPherson as Vice -President of the Board of Directors. Motion seconded by Bill. Voted and motion passed. Please give any suggestions for advisory board positions to Terri.

NEW BUSINESS

We are in need of letterhead stationary. Bettie Mease has brochures.

Ms. Babb of Heritage Village is requesting to come to our March meeting and make a presentation in support for Penny for Pinellas. She will explain how it supports local historical preservation. Board agreed to invite her to the meeting.

Saturday April 14th is the Pioneer Picnic at Philippe Park. Cracker supper is scheduled for March 10th at 6:30pm at Southwest Recreational Center.

Marvin researched having cookies for the fish fry baked at Cracker Barrel. The manager said they would donate the use of their ovens. Marvin will continue mixing up the cookies but this will save much time.

Chuck McPherson presented an idea that the Clearwater Historical Society sponsor a prize for a local high school entry in next year's history fair. Largo Historical Society already does this. Looking into an ad hoc committee and will address at next meeting.

Chuck also raised issue of a lifelong learning class at SPC regarding Clearwater history.

Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Helen Wilcox. Motion seconded by Bob Delack. Meeting adjourned at 9:00pm.
