The genealogy course for beginners has been designed to teach students how to find and document their relatives back through their great-grandparents. Emphasis is placed on family resources, whole family research, and source documentation. Further instruction is provided on how to find original documents, how to do library research, and how to file their research and store their documents.

The course includes a guided tour of the genealogical library on the second floor of the Central Brevard Library in Cocoa. The course also includes instructions in using the computer for research and the advantages of using genealogical software. Forms for recording findings are provided as are archival sheet protectors and ruled paper for recording notes.

This course was written by members of the Brevard Genealogical Society and is taught by them. It was first offered in 2005, during the winter and then later that summer.

Registration for the course includes membership in the Brevard Genealogical Society. The greater portion of dues is used to enlarge the genealogical library. Each year, the Society spends over $2000.00 for books and other materials for research and education.
