This is an alley, now no longer there, between College and 4th Streets in Macclenny, looking north. At the far left is the Georgia Williams Wolfe house (burned after this photo made and rebuilt). 2 story house beyond the Wolfe house is the Bob Rogers house (also his headquarters for a while for his horse and buggy taxi service) and is still standing and in good repair. Beyond the Rogers house is the Luther Williams house (later burned and not rebuilt). All houses on the right of the photo are gone. If they were still standing, 4th Street would be just beyond them.

The M.T. Howell store as it was around 1901.
On the left is Mr. Howell who came to Baker County from Mount Olive, NC and is reputed to have brought the first sawmill into the county. Around 1894 he bought the Darby-Savage House (known later as the "Hardware Brown House" and opened this store selling general merchandise. Note the bedstead in the left window. The young man in the center, framed in the doorway, is the late Duncan Rhoden, a junior clerk. The white-shirted gentleman at the right was also a clerk, the hard drinking and buggy-for-hire, Bob Rogers. Mr. Howell with his son, Thad L., later founded the Bon-Howell Lumber Company in Jacksonville in 1912.

First Brick Building in Macclenny, The Thompson Store, built in 1903 by John O. Thompson
Mrs. Thompson's millinary shop and the famil apartment were upstairs. The building at the right was the Frank Wells, Sr. hardware store.

South Fifth Street looking north-If you had been standing with the photographer when he shot this Kodak around 1909, you would have been in the middle of the street between the present Woman's Club Home and Myra Fraser's place of business. The square-faade unpainted building on the right was the home, at various times, of Milton's store, Howell's store, and Clayton's store, and was the county's first known telephone office (operated by Clayton). The new construction on the left would become the home of the Baker County Press about twenty years later.

 Osceola National Forest Lodge
Osceola National Forest Lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the WPA/Depression days.
It could be rented from the Forest Svc, but almost always had a very long waiting list. The Macclenny-Glen High School used the area for pre-school football training in the late 1940's and the boys were bedded down in the lodge while they were there. It was a beautiful and grand building. Such a shame it was razed.
