From THE BAKER COUNTY PRESS issue of 12 May, 1933
“BODY OF JESSE CREWS MANGLED BY TRAIN.
“The body of Jesse Crews, 30, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Crews of Macclenny, was struck by a freight train at 3:40 Sunday morning in West Macclenny. The body was immediately taken from under the train by the crew and County Judge Dowling, Constable J. M. Brown, Justice of Peace Minger, and Night Watchman Griffis notified. Judge Minger impaneled a coroner’s jury who viewed the body and adjourned to meet Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock.
“Burial service for Jesse Crews was held at Manntown Cemetery Monday afternoon, Rev. S. T. Duckworth of the Church of God officiating. The deceased was well known about Macclenny where he was reared and is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Crews.
“At the inquest Tuesday morning the train crew composed of Russell Lamb, engineer; J. L. Lee, fireman; F. P. Walker, conductor; E. K. Stone, flagman; J. V. Lewis and D. W. Sloane, brakemen, testified that the body was cold when the train was stopped within 11 car lengths after striking the body. Mr. Lamb testified that he saw the body distinctly and noted that it was a white man and immediately applied the brakes and succeeded in bringing the train of 30 cars to a stop within 11 car lengths. He stated the train was making from 30 to 35 miles an hour, with the exception of two cars all were loaded. Mr. Lamb stated that the first car picked up the body on the brake beam and this caused the head to be shattered and one leg cut off below the knee and one foot. The body was otherwise bruised.
“Testimony introduced at the inquest showed that Crews and Clifford Hodges had been together about town until 12 o’clock Saturday night when Crews went into the home of Mrs. Sara Bennett. Hodges is then said to have left Crews, whose whereabouts are unaccounted for until he was struck by the train. O. F. Shepard, watchman at Walters mill, testified that he heard 3 shots about 1 o’clock in that section. Hodges stated that he left the Bennett house with Noah Ellison who was carrying a lantern and trying to fix a truck. Rich Lauramore testified in seeing Hodges about this time near the old dance hall. However, Hodges was found asleep on the road south of the railroad and near the section houses after the body of Crews was taken up. Hodges admits that they were drinking freely.
“An axe with what is supposed to be blood on it was found on the railroad and new highway by L. B. Williams Sunday morning, but it has not been connected with the affair. Other theories are advanced that Crews was murdered and laid on the track to be mangled by the train or that he died and fell between the tracks and that he fell and struck his head on the rail, thus causing death. However, some of those have been substantiated by fact, and the coroner’s jury, after hearing all testimony, adjourned to meet again Friday, 12, at 2 o’clock when the case will be gone into again and further evidence will try to be developed that will clear up the tragic death of Jesse Crews.
“The State was represented at the hearing by County Prosecutor Walter A. Dopson, and Col. Culpepper of Jacksonville, appeared in the interest of the railroad.
“The coroner’s jury was composed of J. R. Rowe, foreman, J. G. Crews, F. B. Crews, W. W. Lott, J. M. Thompson, and L. B. Williams.”

Death of Mr. J. B. Matthews.
Mr. James B. Matthews departed this life Sept. 15, 1902, at his home in Macclenny, Fla., aged 76 years, 11 months and 3 days.
The subject of this sketch was born in Rookport, N. Y. He came to Florida nineteen years ago and was associated with the newspaper fraternity. He first edited a paper at Green Cove Springs, then at Hawthorne, then at Palatka. He carne to Macclenny twelve years ago, published and edited the Macclenny Sentinel, and after having bought the Baker County Press, the two papers merged into the Macclenny Standard, which he edited up to within a few months of his death. He was said to be the oldest editor in this state, and no man worked harder and attempted to do more for the upbuilding of this county than did Jas. B. Matthews.
His opponents felt the power of his pen, and occasionally fiery editorials made their appearance. He was plain and outspoken and none ever doubted the intensity of his convictions; he stood for principle, and yet he was a man of the most kind and forgiving temper.
His son, Arthur, now of Blaine, Washington, was well known in this state. His daughter, Mrs. Walter Brown, of Chicago, whose husband was foreman of the composing room of the Times Union, of Jacksonville, at the time of his death, is known in Jacksonville, where she worked on the Times-Union several years after her husband's death. He also leaves a widow, Mrs. E. L. Matthews, and five grandchildren. Two of the latter live in Macclenny and the other three live in Blaine, Washington.
The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church, of which the deceased was a member. The pastor, Rev. O. Faul, preached an appropriate sermon from the text: “If a man die shall he live again?” Job 14:14. The business places of the town were closed in respect to the dead, and the services were largely attended. The remains were taken to Woodlawn cemetery, followed by a large company of sympathizing friends, and laid away to rest where im-mortelles and sweet forget-me-nots will bloom over his grave.

He still continued to accumulate money and property and at the time of his death, January 11, 1929 he was one of the wealthiest men in the section.
Mrs. Powers joined the Church of Christ about 25 years ago, and has since been one of the most devout and loyal members, attending services many times when she had to be carried and in great physical pain. She was one of the most loyal and devoted wives and mothers it has ever been our good fortune to encounter and she was loved and revered by all with whom she came in contact. She will be greatly missed in this community , where she has ever stood ready to aid the needy and relieve the afflicted.
Mrs. Powers was the mother of 14 children, 7 of whom are living. They are A.D. Powers, Arthur J. Powers and Herman F. Powers of Macclenny; Mrs. L. B. Williams, Mrs. O. K. Garrett, Mrs. C. H. Ellis and Mrs. J. C. Mackey of Macclenny. There are 19 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Five witnesses were heard and the case was conducted by State Attorney A.S. Crews of Starke. The Cornoner’s jury was composed of F.B. Crews, Tate Powell, John Burnett, O.C. Burnsed, Horace Howard, G.D. Bethea.
The evidence of the witnesses showed that Rigdon was walking on Davis with a knife in each hand. Rigdon had married a sister of Davis and the trouble resulting in the fatal shooting, is alleged to have been caused by ill feeling between the two men on account of a recent separation of Rigon and his wife.
In what manner Alderman came to be on the track is not known, but the engineer realized that the engine had struck something living and the train was stopped and a search made, but the body was not found. When the train arrived at Lake City they got in touch with the section foreman who called Special Agent Jones at Jacksonville. Jones rushed to the scene by auto and found the body and notified Sheriff Joe Jones, Jr.
Sheriff Jones with Judge Frank Dowling held an inquest over the body and the following verdict was found: “We find that Eldridge E. Alderman came by his death on the night of June 28th by being struck by S.A.L. train No. 30.”
Nothing of Alderman is known here except that he was from Lulu, but at his side was a Masonic identification card which he had evidently placed there to be seen before he died. It must have been between 2 and 3 hours that he was found after being struck and Special Agent Jones states that he gave a last gasp when he reached the body.

The State Treasurer of Florida Passed
Peacefully Away Last Night.
He Was of the Old Spanish Stock, Born
on Amelia Island in 1833-A Wife and
Nine Children Mourn His Loss.
Special to the Times-Union
SANDERSON, FLA., December 24. Francis
J. Pons, state treasurer of Florida, died at
his home here at 9:45 p.m., after an illness
extending at intervals over the past two
years.
His disease was cancer of the stomach,
and all that medical aid could do was directed
toward a cure, or at least an alleviation of
his sufferings. Nearly a year ago he was
prostrated with a severe attack and for many
days his life was despaired of, but he rallied
and again resumed his official duties at
Tallahassee. His last illness began less than
a month ago, but his condition was not considered dangerous until Wednesday of this
week.
This morning it was apparent that the end
was not far off, and the Reverend Father
Kenny of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Jacksonville was summoned to the
bedside of the dying man. All his children-
nine in number-were notified of their
father's condition, and at 5 o'clock last night
they were all present with the exception of
C. F. Pons of Fernandina, who was expected
on the night train.
At 5:30 p.m. the attending physician informed the TIMES-UNION correspondent
that the patient was sinking very rapidly
and that there was no possible hope for his
recovery-that he was likely to die at any
moment. From that time on he failed perceptibly every moment and just before 10
o'clock passed peacefully to his final repose.
Francis J. Pons, state treasurer, was born
in old Fernandina, on Amelia Island, in
March, 1833, and received his education in
the schools of Fernandina and Jacksonville.
Since the year 1857 he had followed merchandising as a business and had resided in
Sanderson, Baker county.
In 1875 he was sent to the legislature from
Baker county, and afterward held the office
of clerk of the circuit court for twelve years.
In November, 1888, the people chose him
state treasurer.
Besides the nine children which survive
him he leaves a wife and a large number of
grandchildren and other relatives to whom
his death will be a severe blow. The late
state treasurer was a man of far more than
the ordinary ability and was held in high
esteem by all who came in contact with him.
His position as state treasurer he filled with
acceptability to the people and the present
administration of the state, and his death is
a great loss to Florida.

Macclenny, with the Rev. William McLoud officiating. The Rev. Ray McKendree, of the First
