This is a picture of my grandfather, Bill Bennett, and three of his daughters from his first marriage - from left to right: Ethel (Bennett) OSteen; Mae (Bennett) Sullivan; and, the toddler, Pearl (Bennett) Walker.
Bill worked for the railroad and his first wife was Emmaline Coy (Pringle) Bennett. At the time of Coys death, they had four children: the three in the picture, and a nursing baby. They were living in a relatively isolated area, right next to the railroad tracks, somewhere called Pope, Florida. (Im still trying to find where this is.) [note cm: she is shown buried in Verdie cem, Nassau Co: 25 Jan 1884 - 16 Jan 1910. Apparently the baby was Ray Nell Bennett 24 Jul 1909 - 26 May 1910, also in Verdie (the only two Bennetts listed) ]
As the story was told to me: One day, the toddler, Pearl, walked out onto the railroad tracks, saw the train coming and got scared. She then just sat down on the tracks, crying and wouldnt move. The Mother, Coy, saw her and ran up to the tracks, grabbed the baby, and threw her clear just as the train hit her. . (Emmaline Coy Pringle Bennett: born January 25, 1884; died January 18, 1910.)
The youngest baby was nursing on breast milk and the two older girls tried to take care of it by themselves while their Dad worked. After a short time, it got sick and died. I understand the baby is buried near Coy, but we dont know where. My Grandmother, Ada van Cora Pringle, was Coy (Pringle) Bennetts first cousin. She knew the family and, since Bill Bennett was at that time an eligible widower and a good catch (remember, he had a job with the railroad) she set her hat for him. They were married on February 16, 1911.
In their marriage, they had four sons, William, Jr., Dink, Fred and Arvey. Two daughters Tommie and Loyce for a family with a total of nine children. All nine children grew up, married, had families of their own and lived to a great old age. My last uncle Dink - the last of the brothers and sisters - passed away in November, 2005 at the age of 87.
