 Cpl Tucker 1942
Cpl Tucker of the Royal Canadian Army, 1942

The C. M. Barber house in rural south Macclenny. Cpl Tucker of the Royal Canadian Army is in the yard tasting his first sugar cane. Cpl Tucker was a friend of Cpl George Barber of the U.S. Army and was temporarily stationed at Frankfort, Ky. He was a hypnotist and could play the spoons. He liked the rural South and maintained his friendship with the Barber family for many years. Charles F. Barber built the house in 1881 on land he had purchased from his cousin George W. Barber who had in turn purchased it from his uncle Archibald Barber (part of an original grant). G-grandpa Charley incorporated a structure dating from 1848 into the house, but it was later torn down to "modernize" the house. The original house was almost twice as large as its present size with a kitchen, office, and workers' dormitory connected to the big house by a covered dogtrot and white wisteria arbor.
