History's caretaker... Carl Wendell Mobley

US Gen Web E-Zine

County Spotlight: Baker County, FL

While searching through the USGenWeb County sites for one to write about, I came across Baker County, Florida . As I sat there searching through this particular USGenWeb site, I found myself transfixed and soon jealous! I wished my counties contained the vast information and history I was finding here. Carl Mobley, County Coordinator of Baker County, FL GenWeb has shown his love and dedication for this county, along with the researchers and visitors of his site. One could only wish that their visitors would donate the kind of neat stuff on Carl's site!

Carl's Baker County, FL site contains 500 years of Baker Co. Florida history, lore not found in history books, transcribed cemeteries, census records, civil war history for the county, photos galore including photos of 113 different families. These photos are a must see for those that enjoy old photographs. I know I do and I spent forever looking and enjoying. Aaawwww those were the days.

This is just a start of what you can find here. You will have to visit yourself to see what else Carl has hiding here! This is a great site for any CC looking for new ideas or ways to spruce up their site. And while there don't forget to look for the peepot!!!

Great Job Carl Mobley.

ELGIN AND DOROTHY MOBLEY BARNES

Elgin and Dorothy Mobley Barnes have more than likely given more time and energy to serving others in Baker County than any other couple. Together they have logged untold hours of volunteer service in genealogical research earning local and state awards for their work. Together Elgin and Dorothy have climbed fences, searched wooded areas in the county battling bugs, sandspurs, cold, heat and snakes to hand copy every tombstone, in every cemetery, in the county. They published their work in eight volumes listing 20 Baker County cemeteries. Because many Baker County people were connected to surrounding counties, together they set out to copy 25 cemeteries in Bradford County, 44 in Columbia, 48 in Levy and 46 in Nassau. They crossed over into Georgia to copy 40 cemeteries in Carlton County. They published the results of their work in a total of 25 volumes for the Baker County Historical Society who makes the information available to others. They also hand copied and published the courthouse marriages of Baker County from 1877 to 1930. The exact numbers of volunteer hours to copy, publish and make available this work, as well as volunteering countless hours to assist others doing research in the local BCHS is phenomenal. Their lasting contribution will make a marked difference in the lives of others who seek to do family research and dig into their Baker County roots.

CARL MOBLEY
According to the Florida State Archives, more genealogical data is known and collected about Baker County than any other county in the entire state of Florida and we owe it to none other than county native Carl Mobley. A computer whiz, Carl began collecting all the data he could locate on Baker County and uploading to his web page only a few years ago. Carl has copied all the work of his sister and brother-in-law Elgin and Dorothy Barnes and now has made their cemetery and marriage records accessible to anyone in the world who has Baker County interests. In addition Carl has also added records of counties surrounding Baker researched and copied by Elgin and Dorothy. Carl has copied the seven volumes of Once Upon a Lifetime publications by LaViece Smallwood, three of which are now out of print and made them available to the public via the Internet. He has the entire collection of Gene Barber's `The Way It Was' articles completely indexed for accessibility on his website. Carl's collection of Baker County photographs is larger than that of the Florida State Archives and all is available to the public free of charge. Carl freely shares his collection with anyone and has shared all of his information with the Florida State Archives. He is a webmaster for an email list of more than 250 people researching the family name Mobley and assists inquirers imputing their new data.
We are proud of Carl Mobley and consider him a real hero who not only makes a present difference in the lives of others, but also for future generations of people with Baker County roots and connections who will revere his name with gratitude for his vision in pulling from obscurity to preserve the deepest roots of Baker County's history.
