At the December 2020 meeting, the society accepted Rue Lynn Galbraith as our new President. It is with heartfelt sadness that Scott Peeler and Georgene Bender stepped down as President and Vice President. Our Membership chair was also unable to continue. We currently have a vacancy for our Vice President and Membership Chair positions.
Our board is already working hard to continue bringing programs to our members. Our speaker schedule for next year is in progress. Let the board know if you have a suggestion for a topic or speaker.

My Name is Carol D. Johnson, I am the family story coordinator for the Leon County Heritage book project. This is a special invitation to you and your members to submit a Family story about people or relatives who have lived, worked, or attended School in Leon County Florida. The cost of publishing your story will be paid by the Tallahassee Genealogical Society.

We encourage you to submit a story on anyone, The Topical stories can be on any subject you choose so long as the event happened in Leon County.

Subject: New Genealogy Titles at the John F. Germany Library

Good morning!

One of our FGS members recently asked whether it was possible to obtain a list of all the new titles added to the genealogy collection at the John F. Germany Collection in downtown Tampa. We raised the question to Andrew Breidenbaugh, our ex-offico member of the Board who represents the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative. He very quickly was able to produce the attached report for us. This report represents the additions to the collection since 1 November 2008. He will produce a new report quarterly for us to send to our society members.

I hope you'll take the time to review the report. It is arranged in alphabetical order by title, followed by the author name if available, and the call number in the collection. As new titles are received and cataloged, they are placed in the recepticle near the librarians' desk. They are later shelved in the collection using the call number assigned to each item. Please be sure to check both places when you visit the JFG Library, and ask the librarians for any assistance you need in locating titles.

In addition, Melinda Phillips of the JFG Library is working on identifying and ordering new books for the collection. It's great to know that, even in these difficult times, our library system continues to support and invest in the excellent genealogy collection in our county. If you know of any titles that you think should be added to the collection, please check the library catalog to verify that the library doesn't already have the item, and then send suggestions for new items to Melinda at [email protected]. She appreciates your input and feedback.

As a reminder, please be sure to sign th guest book in the History and Genealogy department at the library every time you visit. The library compiles usage statistics and uses the guest book sign-ins as one of the inputs to that process. The number of users/patrons and is an important consideration for determining the budget for that collection. Please also remember not to re-shelve books, refile microfilmed materials, and files from the file cabinets. These items are also counted as part of the statistics of the collection's use.

The genealogical collection at the John F. Germany Library is one of the finest in the Southeast. It continues to grow and improve each year. Please visit the library often and use its collection, and not just on the days of the FGS meetings. You can even plan your research visit in advance by using the online catalog to search for library holdings you might want to consult. And don't forget that, with your Hillsborough County library card, you also can access a wealth of databases from the comfort of home at any time. (Non-residents of the county can obtain a library card for $100 per year per household.)
