Roswell Bishop Fay And his Descendants |
|
Born in Richmond, Vermont, in 1808, Roswell moved with his family to Williston by 1840. In 1850 and 1860, he and Ann are living in Williston, with Martha, John, Alfred and Cynthia. In 1860, they are joined by parents John and Mary, and by Julia, the daughter of Julius, another son of John and Mary. Julia, the niece of Roswell, later married Newton Fay, her second cousin. |
In 1870, John and Mary (Polly) are still with Roswell, but only Alfred is still at home. Cynthia has married Jonathan Talcott, and they have their own household in Williston. The census was taken July 5, 1870; and Anna, the daughter of Cynthia and Jonathan, thought to be born June 18, is not listed. It is possible her birth was July 18th. |
Martha (whose name is variously given as 'Maria' and 'Marcia,' married in 1861 and died in the same year. It is quite likely that she died in childbirth. If so, her child did not survive either, for by 1870, Hiram is remarried and his oldest child is 5, and thus cannot be Martha's. |
John Miles has married Julia Martin, and their son Harry is 5. They also live in Williston. |
Julia has married Newton and they are living in Williston with his parents, Nathan Murray and Beulah. |
There are two interesting marriages in this line. Abbie Fay, granddaughter of Roswell Bishop Fay, married Clinton S. Wright about 1896. Four years later, Odella, the youngest child of Daniel Bishop and the first cousin once removed of Abbie, married Clayton J. Wright, the twin brother of Clinton. The two couples shared a household from then on. Abbie and Clinton had a daughter Julia; Odella and Clayton had no children. Odella and Abbie, although a generation apart, were only five years apart. |
Cynthia Roxanna married Jonathan Talcott. Jonathan was the grandson of Jonathan Talcott born 1773. Jonathan was one of the five sons of David and Elizabeth Parker Talcott -- and brother to the Betsey Talcott who married Henry Fisk Fay. |
