THE BEGINNINGS

From Prosser, William Farrand, A history of the Puget Sound country : its resources, its commerce and its people : with some reference to discoveries and explorations in North America from the time of Christopher Columbus down to that of George Vancouver in 1792, when the beauty, richness and vast commercial advantages of this region were first made known to the world, New York: Lewis Pub. Co., 1903.

1870

Census records give a slightly different story. Charles (his last name spelled "Roslyn" but indexed as "Raslyn") is already in Boston by the time of the 1870 census. He is living with a group of cabinet makers and Matilda is not to be seen. The census of 1900 (see below) indicates that Charles arrived in 1869; Matilda and Eric in 1870. There are immigration records that seem to point to November of 1870; but they are not certain.

1880

By 1880, of course, the whole family is here, including Matilda's younger brother. Note the spelling "Casling"--like many of the variants, this combines a mistake on the part of the indexer (it is a pretty clear "R" at the beginning of the name) with a mistake on the part of the census taker.

Charles is still in Boston, with Matilda. Here we see the dates of immigration. We also see that Matilda only had the one child.

Eric Edward has gone out to Washington, to Pierce County, Tacoma (spelling "Erick Rasling"). He married Minnie Belle Lincoln in 1890, and they have three children: Hattie C., age 5, Marion B., age 3, and Edward L., age 2.

1910

Matilda is a widow, living alone in Somerville, Middlesex County, MA.

Minnie is a widow, living with the three children, including Edward L.

We seem to see a family legend in the making here. All three of the children were born in Washington. Their mother was born in Massachusetts. Their father? From what we have seen in every other place, he was born in Sweden and then travelled to the States, arriving about age 5. What we see on THIS census (and only here) for his place of birth is "Steamer Atlantic Ocean"!

1930

1930 shows us Edward L., a lawyer, with wife Lucile C., age 35, and Rusty, age 10; Alma B, age 8; and Robert T., age 8 months.
