Paul Fay (born about 1801) And his Descendants |
Paul was born in New York between 1794 (he was 57 in the census of 1851) and 1801 (he was 69 in 1870 and 79 in 1880). If the birth order given by Orlin is correct (LDS has quite a different order), the later date seems to be the most likely. |

This census was taken in 1851 in Malahide, Elgin County (Ontario), Canada. Listed are nine children. Maria, Paul's wife [called Mariah here, but nowhere else], is 33, and thus far too young to be the mother of the older children. The first four children listed are the youngest, and it seems probable that they are the children of Paul and Maria. There is, however, a question about Jacob. While he is young enough to be Maria's son, he was born in Pennsylvania, and Maria was born in Canada, as were the next three children. Two children before Jacob were born in Ohio. Then came John, who is here said to be born in Canada, but in all the other documents is listed as born in Pennsylvania. |

It seems most probable to me that Paul went from New York to Canada as a young man; there he had his first children. Before the birth of Hiram, Paul returned to New York, continuing on then later to Ohio and to Pennsylvania. He then returned to Canada. I suspect he lost his first wife in Canada on his return; that seems more likely than that he lost her in Pennsylvania and then himself returned to Canada with the young children. He probably did not wait too long to marry Maria; Jacob was still very young. Paul and Maria had three children in Canada, and then returned to the United States, this time to Michigan, where two more children were born. Jacob, whom I see as the youngest child of Paul and his first wife, must have died in childhood; he does not appear after the census of 1851. He might have gone on his own, of course, but I have not found him. |
